showed the increase of skin radiance by 1.5% after 56 days of applying the cream containing 2% acetyl-hexapeptide-8 in the group of subjects using the cosmetic product. The measurement was carried out before and after the use of the cream containing 2% acetyl- hexapeptide-8 peptide.7 The encouraging results, albeit obtained
from small size clinical studies, point to an improvement in skin characteristics and anti- ageing effects. However, more research in this area with well-designed studies, of a bigger size and longer duration is needed for a valid and reliable conclusion. We also need to be able to better understand factors affecting stability of peptide molecules present in various formulation types (i.e. O/W emulsion or hydrogels) over the period of time the products are being used.
Conclusion With this relatively brief overview about peptides and relations to their parent proteins, I wish to emphasise the immeasurable potential that a carefully selected peptide molecule might offer, not only applied in the field of cosmetic science, but also in medicine and pharmacy, in particular where fine cellular and molecular mechanisms may be used to regulate gene expression in order to modulate cell and tissue response. I am of the opinion that the science
should support future research into the use of peptides to provide new answers, opportunities and guidelines for the epigenetic regulation in anti- ageing, disease treatment and preventive medicine.
