always contain allergens, regardless of whether it is natural or synthetic.
PC: How do you think natural fragrances will evolve in the medium term? Sylvain: From a marketing point of view, I am convinced that the trend towards natural fragrances is here to stay, at least for the next couple of years. I expect the concept will be better defined and consumers will have a better understanding of it – terminology, impact, sourcing, etc. To get there, brands have a fundamental role to play in educating their consumers. In addition to brands, marketing will also play an
important role in changing the negative perception people have of synthetic products. In fact, we predict that the immediate future of the industry will be through the growth of biotechnology. I am particularly looking forward to seeing what companies will achieve in this field in the coming years.
María Ángeles: I also believe that natural fragrances are here to stay. Consequently, perfumers will have to get used to formulating fragrances using only natural ingredients. However, I wonder whether at some point consumers will change their approach and start to understand that ‘natural’ does not necessarily benefit nature. In the near future, I think the demand for natural ingredients and natural fragrances will continue to be associated with health and environmental sustainability, even if this premise is erroneous. If a consumer buys a product that claims to be
natural and believes that it is more sustainable, he or she is then buying it for the wrong reasons. There are so many aspects to take into account, such as the loss of biodiversity, water usage in dry areas, the use of pesticides and the way the land is cultivated. People must base their choices on the environmental impact of the ingredients and formulation of the product… and also of the packaging!
Laura: Overall, today’s society is very concerned about and committed to environmental issues, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic. In the coming years, I expect more
international regulations. This could clearly help to limit greenwashing. Also, the definition of ‘natural’ should be harmonised. It should be translated into a regulation that products and companies must comply with. For now, we have the ISO 16128 standard,
which provides guidelines on definitions for natural and organic cosmetic ingredients, the IFRA recommendations, which regulate substances such as natural oils, and certifications such as COSMOS Ecocert. It’s a good start, but we need more to avoid grey areas and to help consumers understand each concept correctly.
Luz: As perfumers, we have always worked with natural ingredients, especially in fine perfumery as these fragrances are more complex. However, something that is changing is the incorporation of natural ingredients into industrial perfumery. The demand for natural ingredients has reached more basic uses. There is indeed an increasing demand

for home and personal care products that are 100% natural. In this sense, the fragrance industry is making
a great effort to offer perfumers a wide range of natural ingredients, such as new molecules created using biotechnology. This means molecules that can be 100% natural, 100% carbon renewable and even biodegradable. The fact that I can now work with perfume compounds made of sugar (cane or beet) is both impressive and unbelievable. White biotechnology and green biotechnology are increasingly being used to create new molecules. In my opinion, this is where the future of natural fragrances is going.
