14 NEWS Two major buys for Lanxess
Lanxess has made the second largest deal in its history by completing the €870 million acquisition of Emerald Kalama Chemical. This should be supplanted in Q2 2022, when it expects to complete the acquisition of the microbial control business of IFF for $1.3 billion. Both have strong roots in personal care. Among many other things,
Emerald Kalama will give Lanxess a new presence in aroma chemicals, for which it has created a new Flavours & Fragrances business unit, led by Holger Hüppeler. About 75% of Emerald Kalama’s sales of €375 million last year came from speciality products for the consumer care market. Some 30 new aroma

Cranberry-based anti-ageing ingredient from Silab
Silab has launched its latest anti- ageing active ingredient, Peptilium (INCI: Vaccinium macrocarpon (Cranberry) Fruit Extract). This is composed of natural biopeptides, which are obtained by up-cycling cranberry fruit press cake, a by- product of cranberry juice production, and purifying it to 95%. The company said that it “prioritised a supplier committed to practices of sustainable development and implemented internally a specific eco-extraction process to produce the natural biopeptides”. Peptilium is now available as an 0.5-2% aqueous solution, has contents of 99%

natural origin and is compliant with regulations in the EU, the USA, China and Japan. The natural biopeptides in
Peptilium can act transversally on several biological targets and multiple skin parts. Thus, it is claimed to reinforce the epidermal barrier function and boost complexion radiance, as well as acting against wrinkles by improving the quality of the dermal-epidermal junction and the dermal matrix. keratinocyte proliferation and differentiation. It was also tested at 0.1% on aged fibroblasts and shown to increase the production of the collagen I network by 54%, thus keeping matrix fibres functionally organised. Further tests over 21 days at 2% in an emulsion improved the parameters characteristic of complexion radiance in both Caucasian (reflection: +12%; pink colour: +17%) and Asian subjects (luminosity: +6%; olive colour: -5%). Similarly, it showed an anti-wrinkle effect in Caucasians (negative volume: -22%) and Asians (stage of crow’s feet wrinkles: -10%), the company stated.
