INSIGHT NEWCASTLE OFFICE ADVANTECH

of the fact that with the R2000 you get V1000 performance at R1000 cost. It's a new version of an existing product with added new features.

“Its key selling point is the side expansion port where you can put anything you want. It's not like a traditional motherboard catalogue where a board is limited to certain things. Tat board can do whatever you need it to. Te module we put on the side takes several standard busses such as PCI, USB, I2C, as well as expansion interfaces that we can add for whatever customers need such as extra displays and additional gaming features. Tat board can potentially do everything.”

“We still supply a lot of AMD products into the market, but AMD’s dedicated support for customers is more limited following their change in strategy, making our Intel relationship even more critical,” adds Edward. “However, we supply both Intel and AMD as it’s ultimately a customer choice which to go with. Our team might have personal preferences, but we develop a lot of products utilising both chip set providers and that's something we'll continue to do.”

On the security front, another of the Gaming Division’s key products is a toolkit that allows customers to generate their own boot-up hardware. When you turn your laptop on, you’ll see an HP or Dell logo before it churns through to the start-up wheel. Tat initial firmware boot-up, the BIOS, is something the team assists in specifying for customers.

Customers might want a black screen or their logo so it doesn't boot up with the Advantech logo, or there might be other specific requirements for certain markets. For instance, Nevada, New Jersey, and Montana have specific requirements that necessitate the system to verify what is on the SSD or the NVMe stick - what's on the hard drive - before it's allowed to run. Our specific security software helps address this, explains Aidan.

“Some gaming jurisdictions are so concerned about protecting devices against tampering that they take a brute force attitude towards verification. In some markets they manually check every bit of the disc image before allowing it to boot so if you have 20GB of Windows setup, it will check all of that before you get to start Windows.

“Legislatively, a lot of jurisdictions are highly regulated and new technologies and processes are held against a lot of scrutiny to ensure they are right and fit for purpose within the market. We allow our customers to use software with increased security to ensure that we meet and exceed regulation requirements and that's something implemented in our current multimedia validation toolkit.”

team push roadmap products through, finding ways to incorporate R&D’s new designs on the products, putting the latest chipsets on, improving what has gone before and building in new features. Currently, the hardware team is working on three main projects.

“One is an S-Series product in the early stages that’s currently just documentation,” describes Derek. “We're researching what features and functions we're going to incorporate, looking at trends and speaking to customers to find out what the industry is looking for. Te second is an evolution to our J-Series product that is a major overhaul.

“Finally, we’re also working on the next offering in the M-Series, so three motherboard projects of our standard lines, not counting all the other customer things we’re working on. Oh, and as a side project we're also working on subsystem modifications. It’s safe to say there is plenty going on!”
