Proportions are key to the exterior design of any Aston Martin, which are juxtaposed to those of a conventional helicopters. Ensuring the exterior design has Aston Martin was


a challenge addressed through the


technological innovations of coaxial rotors and hybrid drive. The final exterior form was developed through a detailed examination of packaging requirements using Digital Human Modelling (DHM) to interrogate ergonomic issues. The form development and powertrain details are parametric, informed by technical discussions with aeronautical engineers. The stylised exterior form including control surfaces will be examined in terms of aerodynamic design in the further work of the authors. In order to ascertain the effect of the increased helicopter frontal area to achieve the aesthetic requirements on helicopter dynamic behaviour and fuel consumption. This project is a preliminary proposal based on styling to develop a design meaning proposal which can be discussed with clients to ascertain the potential of such a proposal.

The interaction between the blades and the tail rotor, and the gearbox are the major sources of noise in conventional helicopter design, which are avoided by the technology implementation in this


proposal. The contra-rotating


blades would also reduced the CO2 footprint of the helicopter, supporting the design meaning of the current trends in sustainable luxury, as the energy loss from the tail rotor in conventional designs is used to power the blades.


6. CONCLUSION


This project engages in Design-Driven Innovation to change the design meaning of the relationship between tender and mothership by developing an Aston Martin helicopter as a Superyacht Vertical Tender (SVT). Where the mothership superyacht has the VVIP helicopter as a focal point of the user design experience, with the design meaning of a bespoke superyacht tender. The project’s core aim was to create a design that embodied the exclusivity and convenience of helicopter travel with the emotional appeal of the Aston Martin brand. With the future of high-end transportation becoming more individual, the design was tailored for a specific client user application. The final design proposal was a low carbon helicopter designed specifically for the VVIP market, which would enhance the perceived luxury value of the Aston Martin brand. Where the symbiotic
