DESIGN-DRIVEN INNOVATION: SUPERYACHT VERTICAL TENDER (DOI No. 103940/rina.ijmd.2015.c1.38)

Since the creation of the market sector speedboat platform tenders have been the vernacular accessory for superyachts. Where higher end tenders are designed to embody the DNA of the mothership, conveying a signature relationship in port, superyachts are conventionally fitted with helipads for touchdown use only, with a charter helicopter transporting clients. Megayachts have parking and refuelling capability for helicopters, which has significant design implications due to more significant fire safety regulations. Current helicopters in the industry are based on conventional commercial or military platforms, with a degree of interior customisation. This project engages in Design-Driven Innovation to change the design meaning of the relationship between tender and mothership by developing an Aston Martin helicopter as a Superyacht Vertical Tender. Where the mothership superyacht has the VVIP helicopter as a focal point of the user design experience.
The project’s core aim was to create a design that embodied the exclusivity and convenience of helicopter travel with the emotional appeal of the Aston Martin brand. With the future of high-end transportation becoming more individual, the design was tailored for a specific client user application. The final design proposal was a low carbon helicopter designed specifically for the VVIP market. Proportions are key to the exterior design of any Aston Martin, which are juxtaposed to those of a conventional helicopters. Ensuring the exterior design had Aston Martin DNA was a challenge addressed through the technological innovations of coaxial rotors and hybrid drive. These also reduced the CO2 footprint of the helicopter to support current developments in sustainable luxury trends. The main inspiration for the interior design was equestrian craftsmanship, specifically the Hermès Talaris saddle. This piece combines traditional craftsmanship with advanced materials as it has a carbon and titanium structure making it lighter than traditional saddles.
1. INTRODUCTION
Aston Martin is a world-renowned brand and is seen by many as more than a car company. This project examines the potential of Aston Martin as a luxury lifestyle brand. The aim of the projects was to create a design that embodies the exclusivity and convenience of helicopter travel with the emotional appeal of the Aston Martin brand. As the future of high-end transportation becoming more individual, the design was tailored for a specific client and a specific application. The final concept is one of the world's first low carbon helicopters designed specifically for the VVIP market, as current helicopters are predominately based on police and military platforms.
There is a growing trend toward fully-custom tender designs that meet their utilitarian requirements in a way that considerably enhances the luxury yacht experience as a whole and deliberately, thoughtfully and inextricably links the yacht tender to the superyacht. Holistically designing the yacht tender to match the yacht, creates the ambience of the mothership before the guests are aboard. It is the first impression of the yacht, through engaging in emotional design it should convey an anticipation of what the superyacht will be like. Just as a superyacht can be instantly recognisable by exterior styling, so too can the yacht tender. Relating the mother yacht and the tenders together can be achieved through styling feature from the mothership incorporated into the tenders. While the DNA of the mothership should be imbued in the
custom yacht tender, because the scale is different, it is an association, a subliminal message.[1]
Custom yacht tender can be designed to reconfigurable to perform a variety of specific functions to meet the owner’s very personal brief for how they plan to user their yacht. When the tender is custom designed by the team creating the parent yacht, there are other holistic benefits, such as engineering the tender, its garage and launch mechanisms through an holistic design process. The design team can optimize both the yacht tender and the garage at the initial design and engineering stage so that you get the biggest possible tender in the most efficient space possible. Also the embarkation and disembarkation can be exactly matched
to the
arrival/departure points of the yacht as well as ensuring easy and graceful boarding.[1]
A fully custom tender holistically designed by the
yacht’s designer, as opposed to a customisable tender modified by a builder, can cost from $1.07 million to $2.6 million. This is bespoke luxury, an extension of the mothership, not just in lifestyle but also extending the feel, quality and craftsmanship from the moment you enter the tender. Taking the luxury experience of guest to a new level. The bespoke nature of the tender is at such a level that some clients have requested that their custom yacht tender is not reproduced. Paying for the moulds to be destroyed
after production.[1] This project will
examine the design meaning of a luxury bespoke tender in the development of the VVIP helicopter.
