conventional land based units and considerably cheaper than conventional hospital ships. The use of principles of Passive Design and environmental psychology in the design process, respectively reduce the operational costs and enhance the productivity of staff and recovery of patients through creating a low stress environment. The medical support vessels would be towed into position by chartered tug boats. Benchmarking against the 3 days for MSF to erect their innovative inflatable hospital, vessels would need to respond within the same timescale. Given 1 day for preparation and 2 days travel at 6 knots, each vessel would cover 528km, with a fleet of 15 vessels providing disaster response cover from Nouakchott in Mauritania to Cape Town in South Africa. A total of 30 vessels would be constructed with 2 vessel operating as floating hospitals at each network node port and one remaining to provide a basic hospital care provision during a disaster.
