Interactive FUTURE OF CASINO DEALING

with dealing in front of a camera and associated procedures. They will also be taught how to pres- ent in front of a camera and deal with chat ques- tions/abuse etc.

Once their training in completed, there will be a final table test before they are included in the reg- ular roster. They will have been dealing on screen as part of the training process under the direct supervision of the training officer

Is training different for the land-based and online sectors? Are the skills interchangeable?

There are some similarities but the land-based training will be longer. This is mainly due to the fact they need to learn chip handling procedures, bet addition, picture bets amongst other process- es. Both groups will need to be able to spin the ball and make associated announcements on roulette. They will both also need to learn how to deal and place BJ cards and learn the tableau on PB if those games are offered.

Are certain types of people more suited to dealing online, and others land-based, or is it all the same?

In the studio environment, I have found that some of the best dealers I have seen have had no expe- rience at all in a land-based casino. As they have never dealt, they will generally be more receptive to the procedures the studio environments have in place, which are not necessarily the same as a

land-based casino. Land based dealer will need to have a higher aptitude for numbers as they will need to calculate bets and payouts. This is not needed for studio-based dealers. That said, studio based dealers will be expected to know the odds, but as they generally will not know the bet value and be dealing to a far larger group of players, they will not be able to announce the payout.

What’s the weighting of technical versus personal skills for today’s dealer - and is it the same for land-based, as it is online?

Both dealer types will be working in environ- ments that have increasing technical features which they will be expected to become familiar with. The online dealer will have to concentrate

on being in the right camera position, watching the countdown timer, monitoring and replying to the chat screen questions/comments as well as dealing the game to a high standard and keeping the players entertained. The land-based dealer will have more emphasis on the correct bet posi- tioning, game security whilst also providing a friendly yet professional gaming experience.

I would say that there’s a more rigorous technical dealing environment online, but nothing that can- not be taught.

You have identical twins apply for the same post with identical CVs aside from one thing - one has an online background in dealing and the other has land-based - do you instinctively think they would be different in their skills and abilities and who would you most likely employ?

Both! Online casinos are always looking for something different for their players and identical twins certainly fits that bill!

Both will have different skills but their base skills will be the same so both would be on the table fairly quickly. The online dealer will already be used to working in front of the camera whilst the offline dealer will possibly have a better technical understanding of the games.

However, if I was operating a land-based studio, then the land based experienced twin would have the edge.
