Jersey, a self-governing jurisdiction that sits outside of both the UK and the EU, has just turned its hand to online gaming
Executives from all aspects of the sector were at ICE to explain why Jersey hadn’t missed the boat as an online gaming jurisdiction and how it could still offer something different to its online competitors.

Offering a single low cost licence (£15,000 a year), 0 per cent gaming duty, no VAT, 0 per cent Corporate Tax, Jersey has positioned itself as the natural go-to jurisdiction for operators seeking multi- jurisdictional market activities.

company presence in Jersey that includes some game and data hosting activities and the provision of Directors if required, your entire operation does not have to be in Jersey.”
Dr Jason Lane, Chief Executive of the Jersey Gambling Commission, said: “Our standards of regulation are high, our laws are fully up-to- date, and the necessary infrastructure and legislation are all poised to support the online gaming sector. While it is not the place of the Jersey Gambling Commission to promote the island or market Jersey as a location for this, or any other industry, it is important that we explain clearly the regulatory system and requirements to those who are considering Jersey as a location. This process started in 2008 so it has been a long journey so far but
our first operator went live last month with twelve40 offering a lottery platform for both physical and virtual tickets to be part of the same lottery draw. We also have a games designer in SidePlay Entertainment and obviously a data hosting expert in Sure International.”
Graham White, Chairman of the Jersey Gambling Commission added: “Until now, Jersey may not have been on the radar of online gaming operators or service providers looking for a base. With the enactment in the UK of the Gambling Licensing and Advertising Act 2014, that could be about to change. Jersey is a mature jurisdiction that is well placed to meet the needs of the modern online gaming industry.”
GPI’S STUBBORN RESISTANCE TO COUNTERFEITING
This being the year of the Goat in China, a market which really drives the security features in chip technology, it could be said that Gaming Partners International was proving its stubbornness in the constant battle against chip counterfeiting.
Maricela Maciel, Director of Global Marketing at Gaming Partners International, said: “We’re constantly bringing out new innovations in chip security and using new colours, materials and new features to keep one step ahead of the counterfeiters. These new designs can also be enhanced with several new material patterns and colours, including four new Chameleon plaque materials that change colour when rotated, providing a stunning visual effect.”

This American-style chip is made from a brand new injection material formula that is both stronger and more durable. It has been designed to offer an unprecedented variety of configurations providing operators more currency options and also includes ChipShield as a standard feature. An anti-microbial substance that helps inhibit the growth of stain-causing mildew, ChipShield leaves a cleaner, more sanitary chip surface.
SecuriFilm, was also at ICE for the first time. This decal security film has a semi-transparent hologram-like effect that enables quick dealer authentication. A new overt security feature, SecuriFilm can be easily authenticated at the table and includes an additional covert feature enabling a higher level of back-of-house validation.
GPI was also showing its 3-in-1 UV technology, a security tagging that remains invisible under standard UV wavelengths. Because it can be added to plastic injection-molded chip materials, it is easy to validate chips with a specialised tool when placed in stacks or racks. 3-in-1 UV also offers three levels of authentication, including a forensic verification using Scanning Electron Microscopy.

On the RFID side, GPI was showing its new RFID Smart range. Mrs Maciel explained: “Smart uses a new technology that is exclusive to GPI with the technology in the readers and the antennas exclusive to GPI. The new technology in reading chips is faster and cheaper so it’s a huge breakthrough as many casinos are restrained by their budget. We’re looking to make RFID accessible to a wider audience.”
