Live Casino enhances both the dealer and the player experience


A relative newcomer to the online Live Casino sector, Extreme Live Gaming has a huge breadth of experience in both interactive and land-based gaming, and has recently been acquired by the Novomatic Group. G3 discusses the changing environment facing dealers as they consider careers in online and retail with Extreme live Gaming’s Marcus Honney


Is online/land-based dealing currently a life-long career option - or something that’s short-term, fast turnover?


I would say that this is very much down to the individual and their own personal goals. Certainly there is scope and room for both. If the individual is looking to travel the world then training as a dealer will open many doors for them, whether it’s on a cruise ship or dealing in a casino in Asia whilst on their voyage of discovery! With the advent of the online dealer studios I have found that individuals are applying that would have otherwise not considered a career in dealing. The skill set needed varies slightly from online to land based (no chip handling for example) but do com- plement each other and I have had dealers cross- ing successfully from studio to land-based. Experienced land-based dealers will find a new opportunity for advancement in the online envi- ronment due to the skills they have already acquired. This type of dealer also could easily use their skills to become trainers themselves if they have the right personality.


There will always be dealers that come and go or who use dealing to get through college or univer- sity. You will also find dealers returning to the casino after a career break such as raising a fami- ly for example. The basic dealing skills that are taught have changed little over the years. Getting used to the continuing technological develop- ments in both sectors and adapting the dealing skills accordingly is now where the challenge is.


Does online have the same career ladder as land- based? What are the current prospects for promo- tion in land-based and online - will we see dealers rise to senior level ranks as in the past and crossover both into online and land-based?


The career ladder would be similar to a point and the roles would have different names in most sit- uations. Dealer/Presenter, Pit Boss/Studio

Supervisor for example. The opportunities are definitely there in both sectors. Crossing over would need retraining at all levels to a certain degree. That said, dealers coming from the land- based casinos would find the transition easier as they would be able to deal almost immediately in a studio. Getting used to the technology and cam- era presentation would be their initial hurdles. The dealer from the studio will need to master chip handling, bet addition and dealing with play- ers face to face for example.

Could you briefly describe your dealer training programme - in terms of suitable candidates, duration, pass-fail, qualifications and calibre at completion.


Once the right candidates start their training school, they will have already experienced being


in front of the camera, as this is part of the inter- view process. Experienced dealers will be asked to deal and non-dealers will be asked to give a short presentation on themselves.


It is possible to get experienced land based deal- ers in front of the camera and dealing within two weeks. New trainees will take around four weeks.


During the dealing process the new dealers will be trained on a roulette layout, taught French Bets, Neighbour Bets etc. and will be fully aware as to what bets are offered to their online players. This approach will mean that they can visualise where the numbers are in relation to each other and give them a better understanding of the game. They will also be expected to know attributes of any given number i.e. 29 is a Black, High, Odd Number situated in the middle column in the third dozen. They will also be taught BJ and PB. In addition to this they will learn the various scripts associated
