theibcdaily Digitisation sows seeds of growth

In a growing marketplace the broadcast industry is well positioned says Morten Solbakken, CEO, Conax

Reflecting on

opportunities, challenges and progress exhibited during the past year provides an interesting perspective as we head into IBC2012. Among others, we’ve seen Asia, EMEA and the Americas continue to exhibit a strong demand for digital content protection. As a leading player within secure digitisation, Conax has continued to experience robust growth and increased market share from digitisation across the global markets. There has been a substantial amount of chatter on OTT over the last few years and we now beginning to see real solutions

and real deployments – which is truly exciting. While the financial crisis may continue to dampen some payTV projects and

investments, the TV industry has shown definite resilience to financial uncertainty before. Furthermore, television itself seems to have earned its place as a ‘core necessity’, together with food, shelter (and a mobile subscription). For our customers – payTV operators in the many diversified markets around the globe – new technologies and opportunities continue to sow the seeds of growth and possibility.

In emerging markets, digitalisation yields cost efficiencies and increased revenue opportunities.

In more advanced markets,

where digitisation has reached a high level, the key opportunity for our customers is to launch additional services meant to cater to a new set of evolving subscriber requirements: time and place-shifting, multiscreen, seamless integration of broadcast and OTT delivered content, cloud-based services, social media integration and so on. New services are geared not only to retain end users and effectively prevent churn, but also to enable increased revenues generated from these end users, who have displayed willingness to pay for innovative services that enable

consumption of valued content faster and more efficiently. The advent of new devices, more bandwidth and far more stable networks all enable content consumption outside of the main screen, providing additional technology drivers for

Web interface for workflow management

Vimond Media By Anne Morris

A beta version of video workflow management tool, the Vimond Control Center (VCC), is on show at IBC this week, and presents a web interface to manage the Vimond media platform.

Vimond says the VCC builds on the robust nature of the platform’s previous graphical user interfaces, but simplifies the publishing workflow and adds powerful features. VCC was designed for

broadcasters in search of an optimal workflow for publishing premium and free

content directly to end users, as well as content distributors seeking to broaden their offering and provide catch-up services. It focuses on multi-screen deployments, OTT production workflow, and speed. Vimond is also demonstrating how

broadcasters can create a compelling and interactive sports experience using its Silverlight Framework, a front-end creation tool built on the APIs of the Vimond Media Platform. The Vimond Silverlight Framework allows users to create advanced video players that enable side- by-side (or overlay) video and community interaction

the business going forward. We experience IBC as the number one meeting place for all players in the industry – customers, partners, vendors, competitors alike – and the event never fails to provide. In an increasingly complex and competitive ecosystem we are firmly of the belief that new constellations and cooperation between entities will emerge – to boost innovation, to develop new and hitherto unknown services and to better satisfy the future wishes of our common customer – the content consumer. IBC’s broad arena of current and forward-thinking forums, global players and extensive networking opportunities presents an invaluable setting for all of us to continue to learn about, contribute and gauge the momentum of this most exciting market. 1.D69
