2 SAT’s trucks will travel across Europe

ATEME By Ian McMurray

Satellite services provider 2 SAT Europe has upgraded its digital

satellite news gathering (DSNG) fleet with ATEME Kyrion codecs. The upgraded trucks are booked to cover multiple high profile events including the MotoGP Grand Prix which runs

in 14 countries through November this year.

The Kyrion codecs will enable

2 SAT trucks to fulfil all satellite transmission requirements from MPEG-2 SD to MPEG-4 HD,

across the whole of Europe for all kinds of sports and live events, so we have to select technology that is very broadly accepted,” said Bas Giskes, 2 SAT’s chief executive. “Following the contract award for the Moto GP coverage, we decided to modernise our equipment and we were looking for a solution offering flexibility in terms of codecs, compatibility with the receivers used by our clients, and that our operators could use easily. We had a positive experience during early trials of the Kyrion contribution pair from ATEME. So we moved ahead and… it’s all good – the pictures look great and our operators love the gear.” 1.F70

Controlling broadcast with quality IRT

By Monica Heck

The IRT is focusing on quality control in broadcast applications at this year’s show and is presenting a number of quality control products which it explained would help broadcasters to handle the challenges of automated file based production.

standards compliance and conformity with specific application parameters. The Net-Q-Mon is a network quality monitoring software that enables the continuous application-oriented monitoring of all available network connections. The Test Harness enables the self-certification of HbbTV STBs and IDTVs, by providing a professional solution for testing standard compliance. The professional playout system for HbbTV services,

IRT’s Broadcast Server, is designed to help bring HbbTV applications to customers faster and in a more cost-efficient way. And the DAB-Scout.2 gives a quick and easy look at all services in a DAB ensemble and analyses in detail the signalling within the DAB or DAB+ multiplex. The IRT boasts many years of experience in quality researching and testing in various AV formats and of developing products to assist audio-visual

production and conformance testing. In the IRT’s opinion, the steadily growing amount of content as well as the multiplicity of new delivery channels within broadcast needs to be managed to ensure a specific level of quality in the production environment.

It feels quality control is getting more and more important for fault detection early in the production chain and to help control the increasing variety of codecs and acquisition formats. 10.F51

Compact Prime range expands

Carl Zeiss By David Fox

Zeiss is adding 15mm and 135mm lenses to its Compact Prime CP.2 range. Thanks to their interchangeable mount system, the lenses can be attached to all standard HD DSLR cameras, as well as PL- mount video cameras. They also offer full-frame coverage on 36x24 sensors.

The two new focal lengths extend its existing range (of nine lenses of 18mm to 100mm) at both ends of the spectrum

Compact Prime CP.2 lenses

are often used for shooting in small, confined spaces, where the CP.2 15/T2.9

should create more natural images, with “extremely well controlled” distortion, while horizontal and vertical lines are accurately captured in architectural settings and are claimed to be sharp to the edge of the picture (even on the largest-sensor cameras). Features include: cine-style housing that takes all current, standardised follow focus systems; long standard focus rotation of 300° and smooth focus resistance for enhanced control, especially for shallow depth-of-field shots; 14-blade aperture for smooth, natural out of focus areas.

The Compact Prime CP.2 15/T2.9 weighs only 900 grams, while the 1.6kg 135mm T2.1 model is

Roam on the range Designed to bring flexible, portable solutions that can be battery-operated to the kit bag of broadcasting professionals is the Roaming Range, new from Glensound. Total portability has been a key factor underlining the development of the Roaming Range. All units have an external 5V USB as an additional power option, which can be provided by USB chargers, allowing full use of the unit in most environments.

The Roaming EQ and Roaming Compressor are the first additions to this range, with many more expected to follow. 8.E89

IPTV via Wi-Fi Celeno Communications is exhibiting its video-grade Wi-Fi technology and also talking to visitors at the event about its recent deal with Amino

Communications, which now sees Amino’s

A140/A540 complemented by a Wi-Fi USB solution using Celeno’s Wi-Fi technology. The Amino Wi- Fi USB dongle enables service providers to offer a video-grade Wi-Fi solution that accelerates the adoption of IP-based video services by enabling after- market IP STBs to wirelessly receive HD IPTV and OTT content. Powered by Celeno’s field-proven OptimizAIR technology, the device maximises range, throughput, and signal consistency and ensures low packet drop, jitter, and latency, while achieving overall quality of service for lossless video streaming. 3.A19
