theibcdaily LiveLinx goes large
AirSpeed Telecom/ Digital Space
By David Fox
LiveLinx, a live broadcast service from AirSpeed Telecom and Digital Space, can now be used across Europe and North Africa following expansion onto the Ka band Hylas satellite platform. The new service should offer ‘significant operational and financial savings for broadcasters’. It will initially be offered to Irish broadcasters, with subsequent roll out in Europe and North Africa, and will provide broadcasters with a

offering a vehicle-based system for self-operated
lease. Connectivity with broadcasters is via a dedicated IP connection from the AirSpeed Telecom PoP, and the IP-based service can include web, VPN access
and telephony from the remote location.
“The availability of the Ka band satellite platform for broadcasters heralds a game changer in satellite news gathering”, said AirSpeed MD, Liam O’Kelly. “Now, for the first time, we have small terminals capable of delivering excellent broadcast quality signals at a much lower cost than was possible with Ku band. “The fact that this solution is IP-based allows a greater range of services to be easily delivered over the link. By adding auto acquire antennas, we have developed a turnkey solution that can be operated by any member of a crew without the need to have a satellite uplink engineer in attendance.” OE117

New channel infrastructure boosts Icelandic broadcasting
ATG Broadcast By Michael Burns
The output of the Icelandic Broadcasting Service (RUV) has been significantly enhanced with two new 1080i high definition channels from ATG Broadcast. The new TX2 and TX3 channels form part of an expanded playout system hosted at the network’s headquarters in Efstaleiti, Reykjavik. “RUV chose ATG Broadcast to install its 625-line playout system some years ago and was keen
to maintain continuity with the same engineering team,” said ATG Broadcast Managing Director, Graham Day. “Each of the two new HD channels is equipped with a Snell Integrated Content Engine and a Morpheus automated routing control system. A new monitor wall has been constructed in the transmission suite. An Axon multiviewer system, together with Genelec audio monitors, has also been installed to provide monitoring for all three channels.” 8.B51
Allegro has what it claims is the first HEVC broadcast encoder appliance. While the final standard is not expected until early 2013, Allegro says that its DVT HEVC encoders will evolve as new drafts of the standard are submitted. In the long term, according to the company, any application where bandwidth consumption is critical to the operator is a target for HEVC. In the short term, hardware HEVC decoders aren’t expected before 2014. Until that time, HEVC will be most interesting for
applications where software decoding may apply, such as multiscreen delivery. While it will vary according to
the resolutions and bitrates in use, it is widely accepted that the finalised HEVC standard will bring bitrate savings somewhere between 30% and 50% compared to equivalent H.264 encoding, the developer notes. HEVC will allow premium video delivery and most of the delivery pipeline will remain untouched, since HEVC will make use of agnostic delivery protocols such as MPEG-2 Transport Stream and MPEG-DASH. 1.A46

Two-mode digital wireless system debuts
Sennheiser By David Davies
Launched today, the Digital 9000 from Sennheiser is billed as a digital wireless system able to transmit completely uncompressed audio, artefact-free and with superb dynamics.
The Digital 9000 system includes the EM 9046 receiver, SKM 9000 handheld and SK 9000 bodypack transmitters, as well as a comprehensive range of accessories.
Designed for the highest channel counts in today’s increasingly dense frequency environment, the system arrives with two transmission modes.

The High Definition mode is said to compete sonically with high- quality cabled microphones. Alternatively, the Long Range (LR) mode has been designed for difficult transmission environments with many sources of interference. It ensures maximum range with a proprietary Sennheiser digital audio codec. 8.D50
