theibcdaily Focusing on workflow

Avid By Carolyn Giardina

On a mission: Interplay Central ready for take-off

Avid Technology is demonstrating a series of updated technologies and asset-based workflows for distributed production, media

management, and storage. Among these systems is Interplay MAM Active Archive, a media asset management package that combines software, workflow automation, partner integrations, and professional services.

Inspiration made real

Developments in Ka-band frequency and cellular technologies offer valuable new contribution options, says Colin Wood, European sales director, Vislink

The six days of IBC never fail to deliver a compelling forum for in-depth discussions with colleagues, peers and delegates about the pressing technological and commercial issues across the entire international electronic media spectrum. It is here that delegates seek, and often find, answers, manufactures promote their solutions and, within the mix, innovations are often inspired and plans made to carry them out.

Established suppliers are less likely to rest on their laurels than ever, and Vislink is no exception. Vislink continues to be the driving force and inspiration behind such well- known brands as Advent, MRC,

Link Research and Gigawave, which have collectively been at the forefront of the design and manufacture of innovative compact, lightweight, portable satellite and wireless camera solutions for many years.

Opinion

As such, Vislink brands have seen, addressed and, most often, led the way in developing new technologies to advance the state-of-the-art in satellite and wireless communication. The current step change in satellite technology is the development and utilisation of

the Ka-band frequency band. The use of the Ka-band is being driven by limitations in Ku-band capacity where demand often outstrips capacity, with the knock-on effect of making it increasingly expensive. Both of these scenarios are significant issues for live events and remote newsgathering among others. However the development of a number of large, multi- transponder Ka-band satellites and Ka-band satellite networks is now providing a viable and economic alternative to Ku- band. Vislink’s Advent Mantis MSAT has been designed with Ka-band in mind, but has the added advantage of being Ku and X-band capable through the exchange of field

“We’re giving our

customers everything they need to quickly install and implement a complete archiving solution,” said Dana Ruzicka, vice president of segment and product marketing at Avid. workflows to give media loggers, producers, and journalists more collaborative capabilities. New features include video sequence creation pane, frame- accurate shot listings for producers and media logging for assistants, iPad script editing, remote search of workgroup assets, ISIS 2000 support, and DNxHD 85/100 support. 7.J20

interchangeable feed/RF assemblies. This latest innovation enables operators to make use of the most suitable satellite option available to them at the time, with the additional benefit of future-proofing their investment if they want to migrate to Ka-band satellites in the future.

Another area where Vislink is leading the way is in emergence of cellular technologies, which are gaining ground as a viable a transmission alternative. However, these cellular options suffer similar issues as Ku-band satellite options as network capacity, congestion and connectivity are potentially restrictive.

This can be a problem for live news applications, particularly at major events, at least until 4G and LTE networks designed increase the capacity and speed of wireless data networks become more widely established. However, Vislink’s Newslite 6000 provides a range of the most appropriate options with the ability to utilise cellular, Wi-Fi, satellite, gateway or wireless camera technologies through one communications hub with an integrated hard drive for file transfer. At less than 23kg it is a truly portable, highly configurable electronics package for mission critical video transmissions. Moreover, when utilised with

a Vislink Mantis or Flydrive antenna Newslite becomes an extremely flexible and portable solution. If you are a delegate with a

wireless communications problem to solve, or a potential partner that wants to fill the last gap in your commercial puzzle, there is almost certainly a resolution to your dilemma on our stand.
