Investing in DVB-S2 is a low risk opportunity for broadcasters to tap emerging markets and grow revenues says David Hochner, CEO SatLink Communications
David Hochner: ‘Reason to invest smartly’
There has been much noise in recent years about the opportunities that exist within the emerging markets, particularly with regards to the growing demand for TV
content. Broadcasters and TV channels within regions such as Latin America, Africa and the Middle East want the ability to enrich the viewer experience and are looking to European
broadcasters and HD channels to provide this feature rich content. This presents TV channels and broadcasters with a rich ground for expanding their audience reach into these new markets. A report published in May 2012 by Euroconsult revealed that it is the emerging markets that are driving growth in the satellite TV market, with their share of revenues expected to double over the next decade to reach 44% by 2021. With this in mind, it gives TV channels even more reason to invest smartly so that they can reap the benefits of this growing market in the long term. For many, it has been difficult to expand into new regions and markets and it can be fraught with complications. The need to provide localised content is of paramount importance and in the past it may have been viewed that the platforms and solutions available to do so
were unavailable. This has meant that it has proved to be a high risk strategy for many channels. However, with the payTV and Direct-To-Home (DTH) market growing at an exponential rate, in Latin America in particular it is growing at almost 50% each quarter; the opportunity is too good to miss. Fortunately, this market has seen much investment with a number of satellites having upgraded their platforms to DVB-S2. This standard enables the efficient broadcasting of SD, HD and 3D content and it is ideal for emerging markets that desire media rich content and subsequently provides channels the opportunity to expand revenues. By investing into these markets and using the platforms available, broadcasters are faced with a low risk opportunity to cost effectively transmit and
distribute content from Europe directly into these growing regions.
By utilising transmission services provided by satellite service providers via pan-region satellites, such as Amos-5 to Africa or T12 to Latin America, it enables broadcasters to provide an array of entertainment, religious, news and sports channels to the regions payTV, cable or DTH users and subsequent local distributors.
Opinion
The potential rewards from the emerging market place are immense and the potential for channels to capitalise on the need for SD and HD content in these rapidly growing markets is a real opportunity that should be leapt upon now by broadcasters and channels that want to make an impact and seek longevity within these regions.
