OB demand fuels VTX-Hire launch Vortex By David Fox

London-based Vortex Communications has set up VTX-Hire to handle the increasing number of requests for the hire of specialist Outside Broadcast equipment. “We have always shied away

from renting equipment to end users as we did not wish to compete with customers who may have purchased kit for that

specific purpose,” said Vortex Director, Ian Prowse. “However, looking back through our records, I saw that we seem to have sold pretty well nothing to any hire company and with this in mind and the huge number of requests to rent equipment from us for the Great Summer of Sport, we decided to set up a hire division.”

Most of the equipment supplied so far has been for OBs, including the industry- standard ACCESS-IP 3G Stereo

Audio Codec, the V3X Intelligent 3G Antenna/Booster, digital hybrids and other telephone interface devices – plus an unexpected business in the hire of digital clock displays, timers and countdowns. “We supply quite a lot to community and hospital radio stations who are always happy to be offered special pricing for ‘previously-enjoyed’ equipment, which means that we have quite a lot of flexibility with our hire stock,” Prowse added. 1.G11

Ross conjures up a Blackstorm

Ross Video’s new BlackStorm is a production- oriented playout server designed to playback clips and graphics in a live environment. It has a unique production playlist, with clip

transitions and end of clips actions. File-based workflows are made easy with native Quicktime file wrapper (.mov) and DV series codec support. Final Cut Pro, the Adobe CS6 and

Avid Media Composer are able to directly produce content playable in the system. BlackStorm is software based and uses standard off the shelf hardware. 9.C10

Diversity receiver makes its debut

SVP Broadcast Microwave

By Heather McLean

SVP Broadcast Microwave’s new HDR-100 receiver has all necessary features for current ENG, sports, outdoor productions and studio production applications. It has an H.264 and MPEG-2 HD/SD professional broadcast quality decoder, based on NTT technology. Ultra low latency (end to end) of less than one frame is achieved as long as it is used together with SVP transmitters.

Many other interesting

features have been added to the HDR-100 series receiver.

Service providers need to stay on the leading edge or risk losing ground warns Ramin Farassat, VP, product marketing & business development, RGB Networks

Multiscreen deployment: Phase II Opinion

Deployment momentum for multiscreen has been building over the last few years, and now most of the world’s largest video service providers (VSPs) offer some form of TV Everywhere services. With initial technology challenges behind us, operators are now enhancing their offerings, making it clear that we’re entering the second phase of multiscreen – expansion and monetisation. Using new HTTP adaptive

streaming technology and next- generation IP video architectures, VSPs have the opportunity to take their offerings to the next level, adding new services across all screens, expanding the number of live programmes and libraries of both nPVR and on- demand content, and generating new revenues from targeted ad campaigns that span multiple devices.

Not too long ago, it seemed that the ‘packaging’ function – through which the various profile streams destined for a wide variety of IP video-enabled devices are prepared for delivery in Apple, Microsoft, Adobe or MPEG DASH format – was a commodity technology, offering little room for advancement. However adaptive bitrate packaging technology has proven to be ripe for innovation, offering VSPs new architecture options, delivering efficiency in both cost and resources, as well providing new revenues through expansion of services. ‘Just-in-time’ packaging (JITP), which enables VSPs to deliver adaptive bitrate VOD and nPVR services to multiple screens without pre-packaging all their video assets, is a great example of technology for multiscreen’s next phase. With this next-gen development, packaging is performed on the fly in realtime only when that content is requested by a

It has an ASI input, which makes possible to use this receiver as an H.264 or MPEG-2 HD/SD decoder. The receiver can also multiplex this ASI input with the received signal’s ASI and deliver them multiplexed on equipment’s ASI output. Input and Output Video over IP is also supported and an HDMI output. SVP Broadcast Microwave has also paid attention to detail. The equipment can be controlled remotely using its internal web server, a HyperTerminal connection or using the recently launched RTC_01 remote control. BISS encryption option and data output have also been included. 2.C55

not to mention the time it will take and operational headaches it can cause.

In this case, JITP enables VSPs to package for DASH and deliver content in this format only when requested by the end user’s device – it’s a great way to introduce a new format or even enter the market for the first time. And when Apple makes that next update to the HLS spec, you’re ready to go with a simple license upgrade to your packager. Additionally, once the network

architecture for multiscreen is in place, operators can take advantage of the unicast nature of adaptive streaming to implement new hyper-targeted advertising capabilities, delivering more relevant ads to subscribers. With an integrated ABR ecosystem this revenue- generator can be deployed seamlessly across all screens. Paying subscribers continue to expect a great video viewing experience, with high quality, choice and a variety of services. With advanced technology – offering flexibility and the ability to easily scale with service growth – you can navigate the challenges of a new IP world, expand services, and subsequently reap the benefits of multiscreen’s next phase. 4.C78
