an amazing spike in pumpkin pie sales because everyone is pushing pumpkin flavors. Harvest time/ fall is also a great time to move our apple pie varieties and we take advantage of that. We have found that if you merchandise pies, consumers will buy them year-round; we just have to show retailers that pies sell if they’re in the case.
If a retailer thinks pies only sell at the holidays, they will miss out on 6+% of total bakery sales that can occur from year-round distribution. We have retailers
in several of our core markets whose pie distributions are well into double digits. From time to time I will ask retailers, “How many items go across your front end at $10+ and have a 50 gross?” And the rueful answer is always, “Not very many.” We sell pies that can help them get that and delight a consumer who will come back time and time again.
OPTIMIZE PIE
There are so many ways to merchandise and sell pies year-round. Fruit pies can highlight seasonality, as well as celebrate minor holidays. With advances and options in packaging, whole pies can be sold as halves, quarters and slices both to appeal to multiple shoppers and maximize profit potential.
