Synchronised Action of Red Seaweed and Mamaku Combining the extraction of New Zealand’s red seaweed and Mamaku yields a powerful synergy of benefits, capitalizing on the unique properties of both natural resources. In Figure 3, a bioactive network is shown with the red seaweed forming the overall matrices storing the nutrients such as polyphenols inside; Mamaku’s long chain polysaccharides reside within the matrices and help to deliver the nutrients to the cells. Extracting these two botanicals together utilising our proprietary green chemical free technology creates a potent blend that can significantly enhance cosmetic products, providing comprehensive skin care, anti-ageing benefits, and overall wellness. This combined extraction process not only maximizes resource efficiency but also taps into the holistic potential of New Zealand’s native flora, promoting sustainable practices and innovative applications in the beauty industries.
Restorative powerhouse In order to boost the effectiveness of the bioactive network to restore the skin and hair health, we have added two additional ingredients in the extraction process. The first being the New Zealand-grown green tea from Zealong Estate. Zealong Estate is situated in the Waikato region of New Zealand, the perfect climate and nutrient rich volcanic soil provide the opportunity for growing tea filled with powerful polyphenols from organically certified land. The second ingredient added in the
extraction process is New Zealand-grown blackcurrants. New Zealand’s unique environment with its high UV levels and cold winters contributed to the exceptional anthocyanin and vitamin C content, this makes New Zealand blackcurrants stand out from other varieties grown in different regions. Due to their ‘superfood’ status, these powerful bioactives have been extensively researched for their potential benefits in providing defence against environmental stressors and oxidative damage.8 We have especially selected the organic
variety for the extraction from the Canterbury region of New Zealand’s South Island for their remarkable quality. Thus, OceanDerMX™ Restore & Protect – hereafter, the seaweed and herbal extract - was born and we wanted

to understand how it performs to address the common skin care concerns of the consumers.
Protection against UV Recent in vitro study on antioxidant capacity has shown that using the CUPric Reducing Antioxidant Capacity method, we have determined that the relative total antioxidant content of the seaweed and herbal extract is 86% compared to the Trolox standard (the standard the method is comparing against), indicating good antioxidant content. Our initial testing on UV protection was done
through UV-Vis spectroscopy, the water extract of the red seaweed absorbs in the UVB and UVA region with a peak at 324nm (UVA II region), the absorption continues into the UVA I region (mainly 240-360nm).

found through a cell line spectrometry study using HaCaT cells treated with 40ug/ml of the seaweed and herbal extract sample, that there was an average 66% increase in cell viability after UVA exposure compared to untreated cells. The result indicates that there is protection against UVA damages when using the seaweed and herbal extract.
Super hydration With good initial in vitro results, we moved on to check for clinical efficacy of using 2% seaweed and herbal extract A total of 30 volunteers with dry skin aged 18 and above were selected and asked to apply placebo moisturiser and moisturiser containing 2%
