certain crops. This ‘agriculture centre’ will serve as a test bed to see if certain botanical species can be grown in France or Europe. For example, Silab is exploring if it could
relocate more of its peony requirements to be grown in France, and less in China. In the first stage, the agricultural centre will
test if a raw material is deemed to be viable before scaling up. The ultimate objective would be to contract
local farmers to grow peonies or other species for use in Silab cosmetic actives.
A new venture Another recent development at Silab is Silafilm, a natural, biodegradable dry film that is highly concentrated in active ingredients for use in masks, patches, strips and other applications. The dry film is applied on skin wetted with
water, which rehydrates and creates intimate contact with the skin surface as a result of its optimal adhesion. The polysaccharide chains of its matrix then
become more mobile, enabling the rapid and intense release of active molecules into the depth of the skin. Silafilm, has been launched with two products: Silafilm Radiance and Silafilm Pureness. Silafilm

Radiance concentrates Oxygeskin and p-Refinyl, cosmetic active ingredients obtained from garden nasturtium (Tropaeolum majus) and lentil (Lens esculenta), for healthy-glow effect, reflection and pink colour. Meanwhile, Silafilm Pureness concentrates
the active ingredient Acnesium, obtained from the pericarps of immature pomegranates (Punica granatum). This natural active ingredient exhibits antimicrobial action against the virulent strain of C. acnes. Silafilm was Jean Paufique’s idea, inspired
by the ubiquitous sheet masks sold everywhere. This popular type of product is wet, so Silab developed a dry film that will be shipped in rolls that customers must cut, package and personalize themselves. Initial feedback from customers in the
development stage were said to have been “shocked” by the impressive results of using Silafilm and its heavy infusion of Silab active ingredients. The investment in Silafilm includes a new
production a few kilometres away from the company’s Saint-Viance 75,000 m2
headquarters.
The new facility will include a large ‘oven’ for drying the rolls of Silafilm, which are up to ten metres wide.
A family affair The investment in Silafilm shows Jean Paufique retains an important influence over Silab despite his advancing years. Now aged 93, Paufique, who was awarded
the Chevalier (Knight) of the Légion d’Honneur by then French President François Hollande in 2013, is president of the supervisory board, with daughter Anne Paufique installed as vice- president. Anne Paufique herself has three children
involved with Silab, two of them work for the company while the third is on the supervisory board. It seems unlikely that Silab will be anything
other than family-owned for the foreseeable future despite the many acquisition offers from willing suitors over the years. “The Paufique family is not only in the
boardroom but also on the shop floor,” says Closs-Gonthier. “The strong will of the family is to keep and maintain the independence of the company.
“The independence from being family-
owned means we are also self-financing. We have a strong balance sheet that allows us to develop new products without being obligated to shareholders.”
