HAIR CARE
Holistic beauty: new era for hair care
Fabrice Guillemard, Aurelie Cazier-Durand - DSM-Firmenich ABSTRACT
The hair care industry is moving beyond traditional cleansing and conditioning to embrace a holistic approach that includes scalp care and the mind. This article introduces Head Therapy, a novel concept combining scalp science and aromatherapy. Effective levels of cosmetic bioactives are formulated with well-known essential oils that blend in mindful fragrances to create trailblazing Head Therapy products. The Head Therapy concept integrates natural, sustainably sourced bioactives with mind-benefiting fragrance, to create a holistic hair and scalp care experience. The six formulations presented in this article represent a significant advancement on the ‘skinification’ of hair care, by addressing the hair, scalp health and the mind.
Hair care is the second largest sector of the global beauty industry. It is valued at around $89 billion with the skinification trend now driving further growth. The scalp care sector is now valued at $5 billion and 10% of new hair care products feature scalp care claims.1,2 Consumers are increasingly seeking hair care products with skin care-like benefits for both hair and scalp.3
Fragrances and the mind While the skinification trend continues to reshape the hair care industry, the use of aromatherapy and essential oils in hair products has also been gaining traction. A DSM-Firmenich online survey showed 83% of early adopters and 68% of general consumers found aromatherapy very intriguing as a next- generation hero ingredient in shampoos.4 This enthusiasm for functional fragrance
aligns with the accepted wisdom that 75% of emotions are triggered by smell.5
The
importance of fragrance in personal and home care products was emphasised when, in another DSM-Firmenich online global survey with 8,400 participants, 71% of consumers said they preferred scented products, and two-thirds believed fragrance serves a purpose beyond merely making products smell good.6 The perception of fragrance having a deeper function dates back to the first studies by Ibn Sina (known as Avicenna in the West), in the 11th century.7
Today, advanced electrophysiological

techniques including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) show fragrances stimulating brain activity in areas associated with mood, social behaviour and cognition.8
Head Therapy concept Beyond hair and scalp care, we believe in the power of holistic approach for hair care combining the best of skin efficacy & aromatherapy for healthy scalp, hair & mind. In Head Therapy the essential oils contained
in the three fragrances are actively harnessing the power of the mind to complement the efficacy of skinification bioactives.9
Head
Therapy products can be fully traceable and contain greater than 90% natural sustainable materials and, for complete peace of mind, all aspects of sustainability from ethically sourcing to formulating and manufacturing can be achieved. Formulas for three Head Therapy hair
ranges using HeadThearapy fragrance blends; Soothed Head, Pure Head and Strong Head, are presented in this article to illustrate this game- changing holistic concept.
Head Therapy Soothed Head The Head Therapy Soothed Head range addresses stressed minds, itchy scalps and dull hair and includes Head Therapy Soothed Head Dermo Soothing Shampoo (Table 1) and Head Therapy Soothed Head Scalp Replenishing Balm (Table 2).
The Natural origin fragrances in Head
Therapy fragrance Soothed Head features lavender essential oil with accords that are commonly known to have positive emotional benefits for relaxing and calming,10

skincare-inspired bioactives chosen to reduce sebum, soothe the scalp, moisturize and reinforcing the natural barrier against flakiness. Most importantly, both the natural origin
fragrance and the bioactives are present at effective levels. Together they achieve complementary mind, scalp and hair effects resulting in a holistic ‘soothed head’. Both formulas are based on HeadThearapy fragrance Soothed Head, which contains over 50% of carbon renewable sources. It is described as aromatic, lavender, floral and ambery and has more than 5% calming Lavender Essential Oil. The skinification actives formulated into
both Head Therapy Soothed products include Scutellaria alpina flower/leaf/stem extract, which is a multifunctional bioactive extract made from the aerial parts of the alpine skullcaps. This moisturising bioactive targets multiple
steps in the skin inflammation process by capturing free radicals, acting on gamma- butyric acid b receptors (GABAb) and stimulating the release of beta-endorphins, resulting in a sensation-free, stronger skin barrier. This responsibly sourced, fully traceable bioactive is 100% Natural-origin (ISO 16128) and certified COSMOS and NATRUE organic, Fair for
