of language, mindset, project attack etc and the management of my staff.
Te simplest thing is that I don’t hold meetings with my teams anymore, I hold brainstorms. Te platform and connotation of a meeting is very important to engagement. Relabelling as brainstorming sessions my team now come prepared to share their voice.
How beneficial is the ECA scholarship - and would you recommend the event to colleagues?
Kerryjane: It’s an awesome experience and an eye-opener. You are never too old to learn, to adjust and to adapt to new ways. I’d say that everyone and anyone looking to tread a higher path will find the EDP to be beneficial. I have already recommended it to my peers. On my return from the EDP, I presented my experience to the whole management board and encouraged participation in future courses.
the casino industry – no – because your own worth can help you achieve what you want to achieve, but would I recommend it? Yes, 100 per cent. Te EDP has great standing, and you learn so much from it. Yes, it’s paid for, but it’s content that money can’t buy in any normal circumstances.
Teresia: I believe that it is such a personal development opportunity to focus on yourself as a leader, understand yourself outside of your regular environment and meet such a diverse set of people. Te EDP opens your horizons to new insights and participation in discussions with high calibre people with a wealth of experience in so many different fields. Within a single week - how else could you achieve this?
How does your participation in the EDP positively impact diversity and inclusion in the gaming industry?
Teresia: I would say that the EDP is a very positive influence on diversity and inclusion. Not only does the content relate to the topic with the speakers, you can see from the participants and speakers; all international, all hailing from different backgrounds.
Kerryjane: Te inclusion without prejudice of gender is very apparent at the EDP. Your gender has no bearing on your treatment or potential. At home, it is noted that I have attended on a scholarship basis.
In addition to becoming a new board member of the WPA international, I believe it will add weight to my journey, success and will assist in the opening of doors that may have needed a harder push before. In regards to the scholarship, bravo to the ECA for providing such opportunities. It was amazing to attend the EDP.
Personally, I’m on the ED&I committee at the Hippodrome, and active with women in poker. I’ve been elected to the Women’s Poker Association’s international board with responsibilities to push the agenda to encourage more women into poker.
My view of the industry as a whole is that it’s obvious the numbers aren’t equal, but I don’t think that’s representative of any activity by the

industry. I’m a firm believer that gender should not be a factor in career progression in regards to ability or standing – both positively and negatively I believe the right people should be on the board. I would love to see more females in the casino industry, but I’d equally love to see more ethnic minorities. I think we can all work harder to build a more level playing field.
Do you see your industry – casino gaming – in a different light after the EDP?
Kerryjane: Not necessarily my industry, but I was amazed at the wide range of different practices, parameters and general operational entities of the differing nations that attended the EDP. It has, and will continue to allow me to make differences in my approach and day-to- day manner.
Teresia: Te casino business is an industry under a constant magnifying glass, and as such has needed to reinvent itself many times. Te gaming industry must adapt to the feedback of our guests and meet the expectations of both land-based and online customers. I see a lot of transformation happening in the next decade. Responsible gaming is also a big topic that I'm very passionate about and the casino industry needs to continue to address the requirements of different jurisdictions as they evolve.
How will you use your learnings from the EDP practically in your daily role within your casino?
Teresia: I have adapted my communication style and the methods through which I communicate to reach everyone across the different facets of our business. It’s very important to start with the stakeholder and ask: “what do I need to do to include them in the communication?” I have reviewed my project management ideology, from initiation to the conversations and the meeting structures.
I believe through involvement of the right people within the organisation with different roles and skillsets, we can learn more and know more about the path ahead, enabling us to replan and adjusted to best working practices.
Kerryjane: I have already implemented some of the advice from the speakers, especially my use
Te EDP is a course for everyone, but you need some management experience, or you’d feel overwhelmed. At the end I’d describe the experience akin to joining the Magic Circle. We’re all now part of an amazing club.
Teresia: I think the ECA is doing a great job promoting the need for executive development in the casino industry. For me, the ECA has recognised the need to promote the leaders that will drive this industry forward. Most of the participants from Europe at the event had applied for the scholarship. Te EDP is already on the radar of the top executives at the top casinos in Europe. Te number of participants from Europe, in comparison to American and Asia was smaller, but the more people that experience the EDP, and the more the ECA spreads the word about the programme, the industry will become even stronger.
Another benefit of the EDP is the connections you make during the event. Don’t underestimate the value of a well-connected workforce. We have all made beneficial connections for life.
What was your favourite EDP moment?
Teresia: My favourite moment was at the Gala Dinner when we found out that our team had won the project. Tat was very cool. Having worked the whole week, devoted a lot of effort and time through to the board presentation, to return home as a project winner was amazing. I think our project won because it was really bold - it was quite out there - but even though the plan for the integrated casino resort and entertainment was very creative - the financial plan was realistic - which played a big part.
Kerryjane: Te graduation ceremony! Not just because it was the last night and we could relax, it was the coming together of great minds, new friends and the end of a special week. Plus, I had never experienced a graduation before. Tere was a sense of relief, that we were no longer competitors, but instead all graduates. We were presented with our diplomas to massive cheers and there was a sense of achievement after a job well done – we had learned so much and made so many new contacts, people to call friends. And with ICE coming up in January, we will be getting the band back together.
