P28 WIRE / PULSE / INSIGHT / REPORTS
Te Sports betting Alliance (SBA), a coalition comprising major North American sports betting operators, has given its support to California Indian tribes opposing a sports betting initiative proposed by Kasey Tompson and Reeve Collins of Eagle 1 Acquisition Co, and Ryan Tyler Walz in the state.
Te Sports Wagering Regulation and Tribal Gaming Protection Act would regulate a previously unregulated market, put 100 per cent control of online and in-person California sports betting in the hands of tribes, and provide a 'fair and competitive' sports betting environment for Californians. California has the potential to be the largest legalised sports betting market in the country with an estimated $60bn in wagers and revenue of $3bn annually.
Te SBA, comprising operators including FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, and Fanatics, stated: “We recently learned that the authors of two sports wagering initiatives in California are trying to find financial support for signature gathering from sports betting operators. In the interest of clarity, and consistent with our previously stated opposition to these
Ontario Caesars Windsor licence up for grabs
Te licence of Ontario’s iconic Caesars Windsor is up for grabs for the first time since its opening almost 30 years ago with the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp (OLG) analysing bids from existing operator Caesars Entertainment, Bally’s Corp., and Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment, which already operates two casinos in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Tat decision is expected in Autumn. Dave Cassidy, President of Unifor Local 444, which represents workers at the casino is backing the existing operator’s licence to be renewed. “Caesars should be the favoured candidate, based on the job they’ve done running the casino and providing quality jobs.
“Windsor needs an international casino operator who can do what’s needed to win customers and stop them from playing across the river in Detroit.” He estimated it would cost a rival operator at least $80m
to rebrand the property if Caesars loses the licence.
Gordon Orr, Chief Executive Officer at Tourism Windsor Essex Pelee Island, said; “It’s critically important that whoever OLG chooses to run the casino have an established brand, with the gambling expertise and the loyalty programmes that keep patrons coming back.” OLG announced the RFPQ (Request for Pre- Qualification), the first stage in a procurement process to select a service provider to handle the day- to-day gaming operations in Windsor, in April last year.
Duncan Hannay, OLG CEO, said:“OLG is advancing plans that will support the long-term excitement of the casino experience in Ontario... While the eventual winning proponent will handle the day-to-day gaming operations of the casino, OLG will continue to conduct and manage gaming in Windsor.”
measures, we can commit that SBA won’t be funding or otherwise supporting either of these sports wagering initiatives."
"Without significant and widespread tribal support, this initiative will fail and set back productive conversations for several years. Tis initiative is constructed to prevent the market from reaching anything close to its potential to the detriment of all stakeholders — commercial operators, Californians, gaming and RSTF tribes — while enabling the unregulated illegal market to continue to thrive.”
Eagle 1 Acquisition Co's Kasey Tompson countered: “Tat is natural for them to come out against as we are the most tribal initiative ever that puts 100 per cent ownership and control in tribal hands. I have not asked any of those companies for a nickel. Not one nickel in a sports betting bill, so you can only imagine how tribal forward it is. Tere is no mention of anything inappropriate in the bill, nor anything exclusive to Eagle 1, and to suggest otherwise is preposterous. I think they do not see the majority public tribal support, but would get behind a mobile bill like this if they did."
