Major gains in line utilization can be achieved by optimizing the material flow on the shop floor. “If you don’t bring your material manage- ment under control, you will never be able to take advantage of the total flexibility and speed of your produc- tion lines,” says Per-Johan Edgren, manufacturing process manager at Swedish manufacturer Aros electron- ics AB, an ASM customer and mem- ber of the SMT Smart Network. As a result of the company’s material flow optimization only three instead of nine operators per shift are required. The company saw a 200 per- cent increase in output, without any changes in the capacity of a dual-track SMT line for high-mix/low-volume production. In addition to providing total transparency from the receiving department to the placement process, smart material management elimi- nates setup errors and the time spent searching for components.


In addition to ASM Material Management, a comprehensive mate- rial flow solution, the communication between lines and other systems as a part of factory integration is high- lighted. With ASM’s OIB interface, detailed production data can be pulled from the SMT lines in real time and put to use by monitoring solutions or MES/ERP systems. ASM is also a part of the Hermes initiative, an open machine-to-machine (M2M) standard for exchanging data with other manu- facturers’ equipment.


Real Workflows and Real Data


The workflows and KPI improve- ments that ASM is presenting at APEX 2018 all stem from customer projects developed with electronics manufacturers that have vastly dif- ferent backgrounds. ASM has found that close collaboration is the best way to create efficient workflows. The company invited the collaborating companies to come together and cre- ate the SMT Smart Network. What connects the members of the SMT Smart Network is their com- mon interest in process improvements and new electronics manufacturing solutions. Each of these companies is willing to share its solutions and experience with other members. The SMT Smart Network is a place where general managers, production heads, IT specialists, and process engineers report on their projects, including obstacles, workarounds and errors, learning from each other.


“With ASM’s organizational sup- port, we are going in new and innova- tive directions. We are open to anyone who wants to make electronics pro- duction smarter,” says Jochem Winkelman, general manager of RENA Electronica B.V., an SMT Smart Network member. “The only requirement is that you must be will- ing to make intelligent and long-term process improvements and share your experiences with other members. Even after only a few months and meetings, it is already becoming clear that everyone benefits from this type of cooperation. I am confident that this network will enable us to reach our goals faster and more effectively.” Winkelman adds, “With Industry 4.0, everything revolves around the ability to exchange information, collect knowledge and extend this knowledge


to the production line. Data is the key. Machine data and KPIs in real time, visible anywhere and on any device through cloud platforms for the Industrial Internet of Things make it possible. I am not afraid to let other electronics manufacturers see my data, as long as I can also benefit from their experience. Together we become stronger and faster.”


Close Collaboration


During productronica 2017, ASM hosted all SMT Smart Network mem- bers in Munich for the first time, wel- coming new companies from Vietnam, China and France. Founding members include Aros, BYD, CIG, MRI, RENA,


Topscomm, Vega, Velankani, and the ASM plants in Germany and Huizhou, China. ASM arranges the necessary cooperation between machine builder, user and any additional partners at its SMT centers of competence in Munich, Singapore, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Suwanee, Georgia, U.S.A.


“There is great interest in our network, and you get the feeling that optimizing processes is contagious. Each step a production manager takes towards the smart SMT factory encourages others to make even more improvements in their production,” says Ogden. “At the end of the tour through our APEX shop floor, we invite show visitors to watch the


videos we shot at the production sites of each SMT Smart Network member and be inspired by new members of the SMT Smart Network in the Americas. Introducing smart concepts to an electronics manufacturing site is different for each electronics maker, but there are shared processes, and there need to be best practices.
