Intelligent, High-Speed Component Counting with X-Ray Technology

quantities is a critical part of the SMT process. More often than not, even at the most produc- tive companies, procuring and managing mate- rials is a job that lacks core competence and is often overlooked. Accurate inventory manage- ment can be greatly strengthened by a high- speed, intelligent component counter.
High-Speed Component Counting
When machines are not running,
money is being lost and resources are wasted. If a company is willing to maintain SMT equipment in a proac- tive, preventive way for continuous operation, it makes sense to also main- tain the materials that are being fed into the line. Too often, time is spent looking
for extra components, ordering replace- ments for lost components and procur- ing safety stock. This then involves other costs, such as overnight deliver- ies and high premiums. In addition to the obvious prob-
lems of inventory, time wasted manu- ally counting components could be put to much better use. Manually counting components often takes up to five minutes per reel, especially when considering that the results must be recorded and updated on paper or digitally. To solve these challenges, opti-
cal control GmbH Co. & KG worked directly with electronics manufactur- ers to build its OC-SCAN® CCX, a maintenance-free X-ray system developed and optimized for parts counting. The company also devel- oped software designed to optimally reflect each customers’ processes and requirements.
Intelligent Algorithms The OC-SCAN CCX technology
does not use a generic image analysis modified to fit the task of counting reels. The machine’s algorithms are developed and optimized from scratch specifically for the task of component counting. This makes the system flex- ible and powerful, while remaining fast and efficient. A core focus of the new system is
to accommodate as wide a variety of components as possible. The machine is equipped with a model-free approach to parts counting that does not require a pre-installed database or component models. Instead, the software automati-
cally analyzes the images, senses the parts and sets itself up. It also contin- uously builds up its reel and part number databases, and reuses count- ing information it has gathered to decrease cycle time on follow-up counts. Users teach the software as they go, during normal operation and without disruption. Keep in mind, however, that any
