Auburn, MA — PI (Physik Instrumente) has released a high-performance motion controller designed to handle four, six or eight axes of PIglide air bearing positioning stages and precision automation subsystems. Air bearings provide many advantages over mechanical bearings, such as frictionless, vibration-free motion, highly con- stant velocity control, nanometer-precision repeatability, optimal geometric performance, and no particle generation. The A-82x controller family integrates closed-
loop digital servo control, drivers and power supply in one convenient rack-mount design. Depending on the number of axes, total output power of 1,100 to 2,000W, with peak power of 3,900W, is provided. A-82x controllers can be operated in stand-
alone mode, running on stored pro- grams in the integrated flash memo- ry, as well as controlled by an exter- nal computer. High-resolution incre- mental encoders with sine/cosine out- put and absolute encoders based on BiSS-C protocol are supported. The
