West Lafayette, IN —Purdue-affiliated startup, FWDNXT, is designing next- generation hardware and software for deep learning, aimed at enabling com- puters to understand the world simi- larly to human understanding. FWDNXT, based in the Purdue
Research Park, has developed a low- power, mobile coprocessor, called Snowflake, for accelerating deep neu- ral networks that are effective at im- age recognition and classification. Snowflake was created with the pri- mary goal of optimizing computa- tional efficiency by processing multi- ple streams of information to mix deep learning and artificial intelli- gence techniques with augmented re- ality (AR). “We have a special comput- er that can operate on large amounts of data very fast with low power con- sumption. Our mission is to propel ma- chine intelligence to the next level,” ex- plains Eugenio Culurciello, an associ- ate professor in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue. Culurciello says the goal of FWD- NXT is to enable computers to under-
stand the environment so computers, phones, tablets, wearables, and robots can be helpful in everyday activities. FWDNEXT has filed patent ap-
plications related to Snowflake through the Purdue Office of Tech- nology Commercialization, has ob- tained multimillion-dollar funding, and plans to seek Series A funding as its next step. Further, it has built a team including Ali Zaidy, the lead ar- chitect designer of Snowflake and a deep learning expert; Abhishek Chaurasia, the team’s deep learning lead developer; Andre Chang, archi- tect and compiler of deep learning; and Marko Vitez, neural network op- timization specialist. Culurciello credits the Purdue

Samsung-made semiconductors. A large part of chip-spending
growth last year can be attributed to inflated prices in DRAM and NAND flash memory because of a shortage in memory supply, caused by strong demand from data servers, among other factors. If market equilibrium between supply and demand is reestablished for those memory com- ponents this year, prices will likely normalize. Growth in semiconductor spending is projected to return to sin- gle-digit territory in 2018. Among application markets, the
largest share went to wireless com- munications at 38 percent, followed
by computer platforms at 17 percent. Markets characterized by tradition- ally low semiconductor consumption, such as industrial and automotive, are also becoming strong drivers of chip spending, as those segments en- ter a new technological phase driven by the all-things-connected phenom- enon known as the Internet of Things (IoT).
Among regions, Asia Pacific
took up the largest share of market, accounting for 66 percent of the world total. In second place was the Americas region covering both North America and Latin America, followed in third place by the EMEA region. Web:
