Gowanda Develops Shielded SMT Inductors

Gowanda, NY —Gowanda Electron ics has developed off-the-shelf shielded RF SMT inductors with an estab- lished reliability (ER) rating. Accor - ding to the company, the Gowanda ER5025S is the first-ever shielded ER SMT series. The inductors comple- ment MIL-PRF-39010 qualified prod- uct list (QPL) axial-leaded (through- hole) products and enable their con- version to SMT circuitry. This series was developed by the

company in response to a market need for shielded surface mount options as an alternative to traditional through- hole designs. SMT components enable the use of more efficient assembly methods when compared to through- hole methods. The company intro-

ance. Level M is the first level of fail- ure rating for off-the-shelf inductors for high-reliability applications. Gowanda intends to achieve higher level failure ratings (Level P, then Level R) as ongoing testing continues to accumulate the hours necessary to attain those ratings. The wirewound, molded, shield-

ed ER5025S series is designed for RF applications in military, aerospace and space, including defense and NASA, for use in communication, guidance, security, radar, test and evaluation, and special mission appli- cations. With 3 percent max coupling, this shielded series is used specifically in applications where the close prox- imity of circuit board components requires the inductor to be shielded to minimize interac- tions and ensure performance of the overall system. duced its ER3013 ER series inductors in SMT configuration last year. The ER5025S series meets the

military’s QPL requirements for established reliability to failure rate level M and addresses two MIL-PRF- 39010 slash numbers (/17 and /18). This qualification required extensive testing for electrical, environmental, mechanical, and thermal perform-

provided by the ER5025S series includes inductance from 0.10 to 10,000 µH, Q min from 40 to 60, SRF MHz min from 1.0 to 450, DCR max from 0.025 to 139W, and current rating mA DC from 30 to 2,245. The MIL- PRF-39010 slash number

determines specific performance, core type (phenolic, powdered iron or fer- rite) and shielding type (iron or ferrite sleeve). Operating temperature range

is –67 to +221°F (–55 to +105°C). Contact: Gowanda Electronics,

Ironwood: High-Performance 75 GHz BGA Socket

Eagan, MN — Ironwood Electronics recently introduced a new BGA sock- et design using high-performance elastomer capable of 75 GHz, low inductance and a wide operational temperature range. The GT-BGA- 2076 socket is designed for 2.2 x 2.2 in. (55 x 55 mm) packages and oper- ates at bandwidths up to 75 GHz with less than 1 dB of insertion loss. The socket is designed to dissi-

pate a few watts using its compres- sion screw and can be customized up to 300W with a modified fin design on top of the screw and by adding an axial flow fan. The contact resistance is typi-

cally 30 mW per pin. The socket is mounted on the target PCB with no soldering and takes up little space, allowing capacitors and resistors to be placed close by. Other passive components can be placed on the backside of PCB by creating custom cutouts in the stiffener plate. The socket is constructed with a

swivel lid, which incorporates a quick-insertion method so that ICs can be changed out quickly. During

use, the device is placed inside the socket, the lid is swiveled and down- ward pressure is applied by turning the compression screw. The socket’s operating tempera-

ture range is –67 to +320°F (–55 to +160°C). The GT-BGA-2076 accom- modates such ICs as 2916 BGAs, 2.2 x 2.2 in. (55 x 55 mm) in size, with 54

x 54 arrays and 0.04 in. (1 mm) pitch. Contact: Ironwood Electronics,

Laser Components Offers 100 mW UVC LED

Bedford, NH — LG Innotek, an industrial partner of Laser Components, has introduced a new 100 mW single-chip UVC LED. The manufacturer states that this devel- opment is two years ahead of current industry forecasts. Such a chip was

not expected until 2020. Optimized chip design provides

a considerable increase in UV out- put, while waste heat is discharged effectively. This offers stable per- formance over long periods of time. One of these UVC LEDs can emit strong ultraviolet light at 278 nm for more than 10,000 hours.

100 mW single-chip UVC LED. UVC light destroys bacteria and

other germs. LEDs that emit light in this spectrum are used mainly for the disinfection of air, water and sur- faces. With power levels of only a few milliwatts, only motionless water and air masses can be sterilized. This new, high-performing radiation source can be used for such applica- tions as air conditioning systems or

running water purification. Contact: Laser Components
