Solving Wave Solder Issues with In-Process AOI and Rework

he industry has been pushing to remove wave soldering from the through-hole assem- bly process for a number of years. This is not


always possible, due to the speed and volume requirements of the production line. Common wave-associated soldering problems, such as bridg- ing between pins, skipped joints, etc., inevitably require a heavy reliance on rework. Since the speed of a wave solder system


is quicker than alternative processes, it is still considered a viable process in today’s production lines. Traditionally, wave solder issues are detected farther down a produc- tion line after a number of, if not all, assem- bly processes have been completed. Defective parts are then scrapped or must be reworked by hand.


Wave Solder Inspection In partnership with Landrex AOI,


Pillar house engineers developed a solution to inspect products after wave soldering, before continuing down the production line. Products are inspected after the wave process to identify any issues with through-hole solder joints, and in some instances, SMT components. When a fault is detected, the AOI system gen-


erates a unique report for each assembly. This report is then relayed from AOI to the Pillarhouse selective soldering system for rework. By using an XML file for the fault report, the system is plat- form-independent, allowing other vendors’ systems to be integrated. The Landrex Optima III SSI selective solder-

Parallel Rework If there is a failure after inspection,


then a board-specific XML report file is sent to the Pillarhouse system, which creates a unique rework process program. This ensures that only the specific joint or joints are reworked, correcting the product effi- ciently.


When the board is loaded into the selec-


tive soldering system, the board’s barcode is read and the specific process program is


loaded and executed. After completion of rework, the XML file is updated to reflect that the rework has been done and the file is


archived. The wave solder system’s performance can be analyzed by retaining all of these XML report files. The Pillarhouse/Landrex approach is to have


a number of automated rework methods that can be implemented in a production environment. Over a number of boards, some customers wish to identify regular issues from the wave solder sys- tem and then use selective to always solder these areas, whether the board needs it or not. Others require a selective soldering system to be in-line with AOI where the AOI passes the information to
