Sports Coaching with Development of Sport (Outdoor Education)

SCQF Level 7 & 8

DESCRIPTION

This two year full-time HND coaching programme is offered with an outdoor focus although learners may leave after one year with an HNC. A main feature of the course is the amount and quality of practical activity that is delivered by some of the most highly qualified coaches in the outdoor industry who are employed as lecturing staff in the College.

The two year, full-time course includes a period of work placement and the opportunity to be involved in the sports coaching industry.

Sports Coaching Theory and Practice | Anatomy, Physiology and Energy Systems | Coaching of Sports: Level 1 | First Aid for Sport | Graded Unit – Coaching | Working with Children in a Sporting Context | Workplace Experience | Psychology of Sports Coaching | Sports Mechanics | Coaching of Sports: Level 2 | Research Investigation in Sport | Assisting Sports for Disability | Event Management in Sport | Nutrition for Fitness, Health and Exercise.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

2 SQA Highers – one of which should be English or language based or an NQ certificate course with Higher core skills or equivalent. Mature learners without formal qualifications considered.

QUALIFICATIONS & PROGRESSION

SQA HND Sports Coaching and Development. Learners are given the opportunity to gain appropriate governing body of sports coaching awards. On successful completion of the HND Games and Sports learners can progress to BA Sports in the Community, Strathclyde University or BSc Sport Studies, University of the West of Scotland, 3rd year.

Learners are also given the opportunity to coach real client groups after gaining knowledge, skills and National Governing Body coaching awards during the HND. Such as BCU UK CC Level 1 & 2, Snowsport Scotland – Alpine Ski Leader Award – The programme has many industry links including Glenmore Lodge Ski Supreme, PGL Acorn Adventure, Lochgoilhead Centre, Scottish Canoe Association to name a few.

Year 2: Improving Coaching in Sport | Sports Mechanics | Coaching of Sports Level 2 | Research Investigation in Sport | Fitness Conditioning in Sport | Graded Units 2 and 3 | Psychology of Sports Performance | Assisting Sports for Disability | Event Management in Sport | Managing Volunteers in Sport | Application of Management & Practical Skills in Outdoor Activities.

QUALIFICATIONS & PROGRESSION

After completion of the HND learners can progress to: BSc Sport Studies, University of the West of Scotland 3rd Year BA Tourism and Outdoor Education, Scottish Agricultural College 3rd Year and several outdoor degree programmes at University of Cumbria.

At the time of writing links are also being developed with the University of Sunderland for articulation to appropriate degree programmes.
