Building Services: Multi Skill Course (60 Hours)

Small Commercial Refrigeration & Air Conditioning

DESCRIPTION

Introduction to the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry. This course is designed to provide the basic knowledge and understanding for new entrants or existing workers employed in the refrigeration or Air Conditioning sector of the Mechanical Engineering Services industry. It is an introduction to the basic skills and knowledge required for operatives working in the industry.

The course will be delivered as an evening course, two nights per week (Tuesday and Thursday).

CONTENT

Introduction to Health and Safety | Maintain the Safe Working Environment for HVACR Activities | Pipe Bending and Jointing | Safe Handling of Combustible Gases | Welding Safely.

INTRODUCTION TO

Jointing of Materials (Dissimilar metals) | Brazing, Silver Soldering and Oxy Acetylene Welding | Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Systems | Refrigerants | Basic Refrigeration Cycle | Basic Heat Loads | Basic Electrics | Installation of Cooling Systems | Basic Testing & Commission/ De-commission RAC Systems | Elementary Fault Finding.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Employment in the RAC industry would be an advantage though not initially essential.

QUALIFICATIONS & PROGRESSION

If employed in the MES industry the candidate could join the SVQ Level 2: Small Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Course.

QUALIFICATIONS & PROGRESSION

Candidates successfully meeting the course criteria will achieve a Level 3 Qualification with options, issued by the SQA. A Modern Apprenticeship completion certificate will also be awarded. The learners are offered additional further education routes following successful completion of their course work.

Heating & Ventilation Industrial and Commercial Installation

SCQF Level 5, 6 & 7

DESCRIPTION

This four year course including welding option, is designed to provide attendants with the necessary practical skills and theoretical knowledge to undertake the installation of heating systems and associated services within industrial and commercial premises. Articulation routes to HNC and other options are available.

Foundation Training on Safe Use of Plant Tools and Equipment | Installing Copper Piping to BS 2871 | Installing Low Carbon Steel Piping to BS 1387 | Installation and Design Requirements of Low/ Medium/High Temperature Hot Water Heating Systems | Installation and Design Requirements of Heat Emitters | Testing and Purging of Industrial & Commercial Gas Installations | Basic Electrical Theory | Hot and Cold Water Services Installation and Design Requirements | Oil Supply System Installation Requirements | Risk Assessment Techniques | Health and Safety in the Workplace | Welding Technology | Oxy/Acetylene Gas Welding | Electric Arc Welding | Weld Testing to NJIC Standards | Hydraulic and Pneumatic Testing of Pipelines | Heating Controls Theory, Installation of Pressurisation Units.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Entry is required through sponsorship by an employer. Funding is normally available to employers through the industry’s training agents. Adult Modern Apprenticeships are also on offer subject to experience and satisfying Accredited Prior Learning criteria.
