ROUTE 1
Apprenticeship (Undertaken in conjunction with college based training).
This is the more familiar route from school leaver to tradesperson. The learner attends college for a total period of 20 weeks, normally this consists of 10 blocks of 2 weeks attendance throughout a year’s duration supplemented with similar periods of “on site training”.
ROUTE 2
Experienced Workers
This route addresses the need to develop the skills of the more mature person (normally 25 years and older). Course content is similar to Route 1 – shorter apprenticeship in total.
CONTENT
Starting with no prior experience, learners undertake a range of practical units such as cavity walls, foundation walls and opening walls. Generic units such as scaffolding appreciation, construction drawing and building craft science are also included. This level II is completed during the first year of a 4 year apprenticeship. (Experienced workers apprenticeship completing after 3 years).
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Must be employed in trade.
QUALIFICATIONS & PROGRESSION
SVQ Level II. Progress to Level III

Bricklaying
SCQF Level 6 & 7
DESCRIPTION
The learner attends on a 1 week in 4 week block release programme consisting of 12 weeks in total supplemented with necessary on site training. (Routes 1 & 2 are similar).
CONTENT
Continuing from Level II first year programme, this course covers – Fireplaces and Chimneys | Drainage | Decorative Brickwork and Stonework etc.
GENERIC UNITS INCLUDE:
Construction Studies and all learners must pass the recently introduced Health and Safety skills test. This is carried out by an external examination body which enables the worker to apply his/her Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) work permit which will become an essential document if anyone wishes to carry out work on a construction site in the future. (Experienced adult apprentices will sit their practical CITB skills test after completing Level III SVQ).
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
SVQ Level II, must be employed in trade.
QUALIFICATIONS & PROGRESSION
Progression to HN Brickwork Advanced.
