Sport & Fitness

SCQF Level 5

DESCRIPTION

A one year, full-time introductory course for learners pursuing a career in the fitness industry, providing an opportunity to move on to the HND Fitness, Health & Exercise two year programme. A large part of this course is practical and learners should be prepared to participate fully in a variety of physical activities.

CONTENT

Fitness Training Methods | Developing Leadership | Human Anatomy and Physiology | Nutrition and Health | Teamwork Through Sport and Recreation Activity | Communications | Information Technology | Sports Injuries | Sports Mechanics | Participation and Performance in Sports.

A residential study trip is an integral part of the course.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

No formal requirements, however a range of Standard Grades, preferably at level 3 or above, would be an advantage as would a proven aptitude and enthusiasm for physical activity.

QUALIFICATIONS & PROGRESSION

Successful learners will gain the SQA National Certificate Group Award Sport and Fitness at SCQF level 5 and may be considered for progression to HND Fitness Health & Exercise.

Higher National Certificate / Diploma

Fitness, Health & Excercise

SCQF Level 7 & 8

DESCRIPTION

This two year, full-time course includes a work placement and is designed to equip learners with the competencies to be successful in gaining employment or advancement in this fast growing industry. Learners are given the opportunity to work with organisations in the public, commercial and voluntary sectors.

Core: Health Screening | Exercise Principles and Programming | Nutrition for Fitness | Physiology and Anatomy | First Aid for Sport | Health and Safety Legislation | Gym Based Exercise Sessions | Workplace Experience | Event Management | Fitness Testing.

OPTIONS

Stress Management | Body Massage | Exercise to Music | Stretch Training | Physical Activity for Children | Exercise for Older Adults | Sports Massage.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

2 SQA Highers – one of which should be English or language based or an NQ certificate course with Communication Higher. Mature learners without formal qualifications considered.

QUALIFICATIONS & PROGRESSION

SQA HND Fitness, Health & Exercise. Learners are given the opportunity to gain appropriate governing body of sport awards. Successful learners may apply to 3rd year of the BSc in Sport Studies at universities.
