Sport & Outdoor Education

The sport section offers a varied programme of courses with obvious progression routes either directly to employment in the sport, leisure and outdoor industry or to a wealth of programmes of higher education all over the UK.

Specialist programmes allow potential progress from National Qualification through to Higher National Diploma level over a three year period. The programmes are delivered with materials and resources relevant to the areas of study and staff delivering on the courses have a high level of qualifications and experience in their related areas. This provides the learners with a meaningful and engaging course where placements and networking with external facilities, projects and initiatives are given high priority during the course delivery.

Courses, at all levels, can also be accessed on an infill basis for those wishing to work towards certification while presently operating in the industry.

The courses run in conjunction with the national governing bodies of sport and it is expected that learners leave the programmes with not only their SQA qualifications but a host of industry standard awards to give them ‘additionality’ in terms of their suitability for work or a place at university.

The section is also heavily involved in community programmes and short courses, giving local residents in the north of the city the opportunity to participate in physical activity and health education sessions free of charge.

General

Full-time courses provide links with industry and through work placements and involvement in events, allow learners to develop a network of contacts in their chosen area of employment. All faculty courses are available in a variety of formats to suit mature learners and adults returning to education as well as school leavers and everyone in between.

Local community needs are met in the faculty’s courses, both within the College and at a wide variety of outreach centres. Short courses can be arranged to meet the specific needs of the community and business enterprises. All learners are supported in a positive and caring environment to make their time at college productive, educational and enjoyable.

So, if you are considering being part of any of the courses described above and further detailed in the following pages, don’t just think about it, do it now!

Beauty Therapy

Beauty Therapy Is a relatively new area of provision within the College. The course delivery planned for session 2010-11 is a reflection of this quickly developing area, with plans for the present NQ course to be supplemented with an HN programme. We have invested heavily in developing a Beauty Therapy department that both delivers state of the art facilities which in turn is supported by the most up to date methodology available in a further education establishment. This will ensure industry recognised qualifications allowing learners to follow a variety of pathways and options to gain vital experience and knowledge applicable in the spas and salons of today. Expectations are that employment would be an easily attainable outcome for learners graduating from this programme as their knowledge and practical competence will already have been tried and tested due to the placement and experiential learning they have participated in as part of their course.
