– Standard method used to monitor the status of devices in a drive enclosure
– Management software uses SES to issue queries to an intelligent storage controller over in-band FC
• Enclosure devices include:
– RAID controllers – Power supplies – Cooling modules and temperature sensors – Door locks
• Considered a legacy protocol but still supported by some manufacturers (e.g. Brocade) to permit in-band management of storage devices
SCSI Enclosure Services (SES) is a management standard for monitoring the status of devices in a storage device enclosure:
• Disks typically reside in enclosures that provide power, cooling, and protection for the devices.
• Intelligent controllers can provide external indicators about the health of the enclosure and the components within it.
• An application client software package issues requests for status information, and uses the resulting data to provide notification to system administrators.
• The Enclosure Services Device may communicate on the same bus with the peripherals, or on a separate bus.
