Fibre Channel Data Constructs Ordered Sets and Primitives
Primitive Sequences
• Primitive Sequences are used for link control:
– Transmitted repeatedly until response is received
• Fabric primitive sequences:
– NOS – OLS –LR
– LRR
• Loop primitive sequences:
– LIP – LPB – LPE

Primitive Signals are a single entity. Primitive Sequences, on the other hand, continue to be transmitted until a response is received. For example, NOS is sent by an N_Port until OLS is received from the F_Port in the switch. Similarly, LR is sent until LRR is received.
Ports are required to receive a minimum of three consecutive occurrences of the same Primitive Sequence before acknowledging its validity and responding accordingly.
