Fibre Channel Addressing and Routing World-Wide Names
World-Wide Names
• Every Fibre Channel port and node have “hard” coded addresses called World Wide Names (WWNs):
– Allocated to manufacturer by IEEE or equivalent – Coded into each device when manufactured – 64 or 128 bits (128 bits most common today)
• Name Server maps WWNs to FCIDs
WWNN 20 0000203701EF25
Example: Seagate Disk Drive
World-Wide Names (WWNs) are important for enabling fabric services: • WWNs are guaranteed to be unique. • WWNs are permanently associated with devices. • These characteristics ensure that the fabric can identify and locate devices.
