Fibre Channel Addressing and Routing Fabric Configuration Process
Stage 3: Domain ID Assignment
• Principal Switch floods fabric with DIA SW_ILS • Switches respond with RDI to request domain IDs
• Principal Switch responds with SW_ACC containing assigned domain ID
• When domain IDs have been assigned, Principal Switch sends an EFP with list of all domain IDs
Principal Switch
Switches propagate requests to all upstream/ downstream switches
DIA DIA
After the Principal Switch has been elected: • The Principal Switch floods the fabric with Domain ID Assignment (DIA) SW_ILS commands. DIA tells the other switches in the fabric that they can now request domain IDs. Each switch is responsible for propagating DIAs to its downstream switches.
• After receiving DIA, the switches respond with a Request Domain ID (RDI) command to request a domain ID. Each switch is responsible for propagating RDIs to its upstream switch.
• The Principal Switch responds to RDI requests with SW_ACC, which contains the assigned domain ID. Each switch is responsible for propagating SW_ACCs to its downstream switches.
• When all domain IDs have been assigned, the Principal Switch then sends an EFP which contains the list of assigned domain IDs. Each switch is responsible for propagating the EFP to its downstream switches.
