Fibre Channel Addressing and Routing Fabric Configuration Process
Multi-Switch Fabrics
• Improper switch configuration in a multi-switch fabric can result in segmented fabrics
– Domain ID conflicts – Zone conflicts – Vendor interoperability issues
• Switches isolate ISLs in an attempt to prevent improper configuration from destabilizing the fabric
• One or more switches are isolated from the fabric— fabric segmentation
FC switches are not yet capable of “plug-and-play” operation with respect to multi-switch configurations. Differences in vendors’ implementations of certain interswitch protocol functions can make interoperability difficult to achieve, and even connecting two FC switches from the same vendor can be a relatively complex task as compared to Ethernet switches. Improper switch configuration can result in a segmented fabric in which one or more switches are isolated from the fabric. These configuration issues include: • Domain ID conflicts • Zone conflicts • Vendor interoperability issues
When these issues occur, the switches isolate ISLs in an attempt to prevent improper configuration from destabilizing the fabric.
