Stage 1: Link Initialization
• Negotiate port speed - 1Gb/s, 2Gb/s, 4Gb/s or 8Gb/s • Acquire word synchronization
–NOS –OLS –LR –LRR
• Determine switch port operating mode
– FL_Port – F_Port –E_Port

(Fx_Port or E_Port)
When a switch port detects a valid signal on its attached link, it negotiates port speed. The two ports then attempt to achieve word synchronization by exchanging Ordered Sets.
When the ports achieve word synchronization, the switch port must assume the correct mode (Fx_Port or E_Port).
