– A standard for communication with networked devices from multiple vendors
– Very common in LAN/WAN world
• SNMP defines device attributes via Management Information Bases (MIBs)
• SNMP traps:
– Administrators specify conditions in which agents should send status messages to management applications
– Standard and device-specific traps
• SNMPv2 has limited security—vendors are starting to introduce SNMPv3 support which is more secure
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is a device management protocol used in most LAN devices and many SAN devices. SNMP is traditionally used on IP networks.
Device manufacturers provide SNMP agents on their devices and software applications to incorporate the SNMP protocol:
• Each device has a Management Information Base (MIB) that models the attributes of that device.
• SNMP agents and applications access the SNMP objects in the MIB to allow users to view and configure networked devices
• Administrators set up traps that tell the SNMP agents to send an alert when specified conditions occur
