The formulae for the volume and the curved surface area of a cylinder appear in the formulae and tables booklet.
The formula in the formulae and tables booklet is only for the curved surface area. To fi nd the total surface area of a solid cylinder, you will need to add the areas of the circles at the top and the base.
Worked example 2 A solid cylinder has a height of 7 ⋅ 5 cm and a radius of 5 cm. Calculate: (i) the volume, to the nearest whole number (ii) the total surface area, to one decimal place.
Solution (i)
(ii) 5 cm 7.5 cm
Worked example 3 A cylinder has a volume of 628 cm3
Solution
radius = ? and a height of 5 cm. Calculate the value of the radius to two decimal places, taking π = 3·14. 5 cm
