14.7 Solving quadratic equations using the quadratic formula
By the end of this section you should be able to:
● solve quadratic expressions using the quadratic formula
A formula can be used to solve quadratic equations. The formula we use is called the ‘quadratic formula’ or the ‘minus b formula’. This formula bypasses the factors and goes straight to the solution(s).
Quadratic formula
When a quadratic equation is in the form ax2
+bx+c= 0 , the solution(s) can be found using the equation: x= −b± √
___________ 2a
_ b2
− 4ac Note: Only the coeffi cients and the constant are substituted into the formula.
Worked example (i) Solve 2 x2
Solution (i)
If a question asks for the answer to be given in surd or decimal form, it is usually an indication that you have to use the quadratic formula.
This formula appears in the formulae and tables booklet.
(ii) Hence, draw a sketch of the function f (x) = −2x2
− 4x − 3 = 0 . Give your answers in surd form and rounded to two decimal places. − 4x − 3
