New research into naturally- derived sufactants
Lonza presented the latest research on polyglycerol ester surfactants and showcased its Polyaldo brand at SEPAWA in October. Lonza also featured ScreenLight Block, its new bioactive functional ingredient that helps protect skin against the visible effects of blue light, UV light and pollution. The Lonza Polyaldo
polyglyceral esters (PGEs) are naturally-derived surfactants that can be easily customised to suit the cleansing-formulation needs of the global personal care market. PEGylation-free, ethylene oxide-free, and 1,4- dioxane free, Polyaldo PGE includes proprietary and versatile alternatives to synthetic surfactants. The PGE range offers excellent foam generation while maintaining mildness.
Speaking to Personal Care,
Lonza’s global head of Research and Technology, Jordan Petkov, said: “We have 100% natural-
originated surfactants, but we need to tame or domesticate the natural surfactants. They normally suffer from functionality issues compared to synthetic ones where you can almost design the functionality. With natural surfactants the level of building blocks is not that rich – you have glycerine and fatty acids; that’s it. If you are smart and you need to find the same or similar level of functionality as with synthetics you need to play the game and
Gold CSR rating

appraisal of the group- wide efforts and
commitments to install the same high standards for performance across all
regions in which we operate. All teams and functions worked hard towards the same goal and we will take a moment to celebrate this great
achievement. It is an important motivation to stay on this track and continue creating a positive impact on improving fair business practices, labour practices, environment and sustainable procurement globally and to set an example for others,” said María Jesús Almenar Martin, head of Azelis group Safety, Health, Environment and Quality who is leading CSR at Azelis.
squeeze out every bit of functionality from these surfactants. This is why we have taken on a new ‘ultimate characterization journey’, where we don’t just stop at the usual methods like ‘surface tension’ and ‘foam’. We go the Full Monty, meaning we measure the surface tension, bulk properties, size and shape of aggregates and measure the interfacial rheology, which is essential, as well as the stability of foams and emulsions.”
Natural
antimicrobial protection
Minasolve has announced the release of A-Leen Aroma-3 and E-Leen Green A, two new universal personal care solutions offering natural antimicrobial protection over a large pH range. A Leen Aroma-3 is a mild perfuming agent. E-Leen Green A, a skin moisturiser and skin conditioner, is among a fast-growing number of personal care ingredients using the multifunctional compound bio-based pentylene glycol. Minasolve markets this compound under the name Pentiol Green+, an antimicrobial boosting agent that naturally protects cosmetic products. This key bio-based ingredient inhibits the growth of microbes in cosmetics and marks an innovative alternative to petrochemical-based preservatives that can be harsh and unfriendly to the skin and the environment.
