SenzaGen has launched GARDair, the first in vitro test for airway allergies. Removing the need for animal testing and opening a completely new market, GARDair is based on the company’s proprietary GARD technology platform. Using genetic biomarkers, GARDair tests whether substances and chemicals that are inhaled or come into contact with the lungs are allergenic or not, with high accuracy. There are currently no methods available for testing if chemicals can contribute to or cause allergic reactions in the respiratory tract. GARDair makes use of genetic biomarkers which cover the
entire immune reaction and are relevant to predicting the risk of hypersensitivity.
Using the same technology
platform as the already launched GARDskin, GARDair is supported by the EU’s SME program Horizon2020 and has been developed in cooperation with AstraZeneca. Anki Malmborg Hager, CEO of SenzaGen, spoke with Personal Care about the company’s developments so far and the launch of GARDair: “What we have discovered is that GARD is so much more than a single skin sensitisation test. It’s really more of a technology platform from which you can develop, based on the same principles, other tests with
other toxicological endpoints. This is why we decided to call the skin senstisation test ‘GARDSkin’ in order to define it, and we now have GARDair for the lung sensitisation. The tests are available now, they are animal-free, based on human cells, and it’s a service whereby you send your ingredients to us and we test them and send back a report. “There is a huge demand for GARDair from customers in the chemicals, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries. GARDair in combination with GARDskin provides new insights and thereby new opportunities for our customers to actively avoid chemicals with multiple allergenic effects.”

Vinegar is a highly beneficial, multi-functional ingredient known for centuries. In particular our hair profits immensely from vinegar, as it is pH-balancing and naturally cleansing. Therefore, vinegar- based ingredients are optimal to fight damaged, dull and unruly hair.

EDITOR’S COMMENT Considering the new ‘Roaring Twenties’
As we near the end of the year, thoughts naturally turn to what is in store for 2019 and then the next decade. What will the ‘Twenties’ bring? A logical progression from current trends would see the personal care industry build its men’s grooming market and consumers would be able to order products designed and formulated specifically for their needs. We have recently seen stores opening who will create products based on DNA samples – is this a taste of what is to come? Will the drive towards natural formulations continue or could there be a shift back to synthetic ingredients? Will social media still be a significant influence or will something else have risen in its place? Of course, we have no way of knowing, but Personal Care will certainly be
there to give formulators the latest information on emerging trends and technologies.

reduce hair damage, while leaving smooth hair with a stunning shine. VNGR+ are extracts from plant material with vinegar and glycerin as the extraction system. The extraction with both, vinegar and glycerin, creates powerful, virtually alcohol-free tinctures. Being optimised for formulation
compatibility, performance and efficacy, VNGR+ extracts are the ideal addition for daily hair perfection.
Cider VNGR+ is an extract
from mallow flowers and nettle herbs with Swiss organic apple cider vinegar and glycerine, while Rice VNGR+ is an extract from chrysanthemum flowers and polygonum roots with rice vinegar and glycerin.
