Change to South Africa’s online gaming law could be a long way off but we are seeing real opportunity for growth in key jurisdictions right now such as Botswana and Kenya while the sector will continue to expand in Ghana and Nigeria. In Nigeria, the fragmented regulatory environment may deter operators, making federal licenses potentially invalid.


According to the DA the absence of regulation not only


fosters an erosion of the rule of law and increases criminal activity but also leaves the public less protected compared to land-based gaming operations. Furthermore, the lack of regulation is causing the loss of billions of Rands in revenue and numerous job opportunities to other gambling jurisdictions. In November 2024 Roger William Tobias MP for the DA


notified Parliament that he intended to introduce the Remote Gambling Bill, 2024 in the National Assembly of Parliament. Interested parties were invited to submit written comments on the draft Bill to the Speaker of the National Assembly within 30 days of the notice. While there has been no news on the bill South Africa’s

Africa’s online gambling sector is growing fast, with key developments in Botswana, Kenya, Ghana, and Nigeria, despite regulatory uncertainty.


Change to South Africa’s online gaming law could be a long way off but we are seeing real opportunity for growth in key jurisdictions right now such as Botswana and Kenya while the sector will continue to expand in Ghana and Nigeria. In Nigeria, the fragmented regulatory environment may deter operators, making federal licenses potentially invalid. On the other hand, it could lead to more cooperation between states as they regulate the sector. Meanwhile improved monitoring over online transactions will improve the industry further in the region and increase government revenue. Africa will undoubtedly continue to provide plenty of opportunities and we are likely to see many highly significant developments this year.
