Help plan for taking medications during Shabbat and holidays, especially medications that must be taken with food or water.
Teach how to consider portion sizes and ingredients when eating traditional foods. For example, bagels are made in assorted sizes, and some are sweetened with sugar while others are not. Similarly, not all types of matzos are the same size or thickness (portions can vary from 30 to 60 g of carbohydrates, which is important for those who track carbohydrate intake).

Assess the person’s views about performing medically related tasks, such as weighing, doing blood glucose or blood pressure tests, or taking (injectable) medication on the Shabbat or holi- days. Some who are Orthodox believe these are “an everyday activity,” which would mean that these tasks would be prohibited on the Shabbat or on holidays.
For those living with diabetes and if they observe Shabbat, discuss the potential risks caused by changes in meal timing and amounts of food, increased walking on Shabbat, and reduced monitoring.
