Tips and Strategies for Nutrition Counseling and Care of People Practicing Judaism
Use the cultural encounter questions on pages 41 and 42 to help assess individual food and health practices.
Communication Maintain a comfortable physical distance to avoid an inadver- tent touch when providing care. Be aware that Orthodox men are not allowed to touch or be alone with women except for their wives, mothers, or daughters in accordance with the laws of Shomrei negiah/guardians of the touch. They therefore will not shake a woman’s hand and may avoid eye contact.32
Become familiar with important Jewish dates and holidays, such as Jewish High Holy Days (especially Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur) and Shabbat (Sabbath). Use this when scheduling appointments and for planning discussions about upcoming hol- idays. This is important, even among those who may not observe Jewish holidays or regularly attend religious services. A current calendar is available online (

Be aware that shalom is a Hebrew word that may be used to mean hello, goodbye, or peace.
Family Demands and Dynamics The Jewish family and social structure are traditionally hier- archical; however, every American Jewish family has its own demands and dynamics. Some observant Jewish families may be more insular (may not watch television, many not listen to secular music or to radio broadcasts, and may restrict internet browsing). This can affect their health literacy. It is important to inquire about how they receive health information and if there is someone in the community who provides health care and advice. Often the head of the community or the rabbi provides guidance in all personal matters, including health.33
Based on the traditional Jewish family structure, the primary responsibility of mothers is home centric, having the responsibility for preparing meals and ensuring good nutrition.34
They may
have limited access to nutrition and health information, so asking how they obtain nutrition information is important when providing nutrition guidance.
Mealtime is an important foundational experience for fami- lies, especially for Shabbat and Jewish Holidays. The cultural and religious practices that influence dietary patterns must be considered for ensuring person- and family-centered nutrition guidance. Suggest ways to prepare for the challenges of typical family meals and holiday celebrations. Provide options that respect the significance of food as a means to introduce children and family to Jewish religion and culture.
If possible, provide health-related dietary guidance before family or holiday celebrations or rituals. That includes guidance on fasting, if the observance includes a fast.
Nutrition Counseling Jewish religious practices also can affect everyday eating and medication regimens, such as meal timing, fasting, consuming matzos and challah, drinking wine, restricting foods during holi- days, and other rituals. Understanding the foundational concepts of Judaism, including dietary laws, holidays, and an individual’s levels of observance, especially for Shabbat and holidays, is essential for providing dietary recommendations and care plans that are person centered.
Be aware that Jewish people who do not strictly follow kosher laws may have kosher-style eating practices. Therefore, ask respectfully about the specific practices of each individual, instead of simply inquiring whether they keep kosher.
Ask about cultural food traditions. For example, the heritage and traditional foods of Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews are not identical.
Discuss how faith-based practices, including prayer times (described on page 620), may influence and perhaps alter everyday and holiday meal plans.
In discussions of holidays and mealtimes, address each holiday individually. Identify what foods and dietary practices are part of that holiday and whether the person intends to fast or restrict foods.
For those who observe Sabbath or Jewish holidays, ask about the challenges they face on these days and practices, such as fasting, that can interfere with dietary management of a health condition. Also, keep in mind that sundown (the beginning of Shabbat) occurs at a different time depending on the season, which can affect the planning and timing of meals.
If a Jewish person intends to fast during a holiday, discuss strate- gies for fasting and breaking fasts safely. Holiday restrictions of food and water (and other beverages) are usually observed until after sundown unless there is danger to a human life.
