Fucoidan: Where science meets sustainability

The demand for quality marine ingredients is being fuelled from three directions. Skincare formulators are increasingly seeking new ingredients that are natural, efficacious and sustainable. Investment in robust scientific research and in advanced green chemistry technologies have now placed novel seaweed extracts at the forefront of science and sustainability. A look through history reveals that seaweeds


have been prized for their dietary and therapeutic properties for centuries.1


However, it


has only been in more recent times that some of their unique compounds have been identified and studied for their bioactive properties.


Introducing fucoidan Fucoidans, pronounced ‘few-coy-dens’, are one of these compounds. Derived from brown seaweeds, these bioactive polysaccharides serve to protect the seaweed plant against a range of external stresses. Recent advances in science indicate that many of the same protective benefits that fucoidans offer to the seaweed plant may also be harnessed to address a wide range of human health indications.

study, high purity fucoidans were shown to significantly inhibit the adhesion of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, a known aggravator of the widespread condition atopic dermatitis, or eczema. The adhesion of the bacterium


Cutibacterium acnes, which is believed to play an important role in the widespread skin condition acne, was also significantly reduced. Importantly, the fucoidan did not affect the adhesion of Staphylococcus epidermidis – a common bacterium found on healthy skin. Fucoidans hold promising therapeutic


potential for use in topical treatments for inflammatory skin conditions and as such are increasingly attracting the attention of dermatologists and allied clinicians.


Award-winning green chemistry Manufacturers of fucoidan extracts have traditionally utilised solvents to precipitate the fucoidan polymer from crude seaweed extracts.4


This traditional methodology may
