44 IFSCC CONGRESS 2022

IFSCC Congress ready for London return

Tim Probert - Personal Care Global

This year’s International Federation of Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) Congress will be held in London for the first time since 1988 – the year of the ending of the Iran-Iraq war, the Soviet Union withdrawal from Afghanistan, Lockerbie, and odds-defying Wimbledon beating Liverpool in the English FA Cup final. In the intervening 34 years, the IFSCC

Congress has returned to British shores just once – in Edinburgh in 2002 – but not London. That will change this month when the 32nd Congress will be held in Westminster - the first in-person event since 2019. The 32nd Congress will kick off on Monday

19 September with the opening ceremony, educational workshops and IFSCC Council meeting at the iconic Central Hall opposite Westminster Abbey. This was where the first meeting of the United Nations General Assembly was hosted in 1946. The opening ceremony will acknowledge

the 2020 Congress and 2021 Conference Award Winners, catching up on IFSCC celebration of best cosmetic science. The main Congress venue is the Park Plaza

PERSONAL CARE September 2022

Hotel, Westminster for the three days from 20-22 September. An informal networking event will take

place at Madame Tussauds, Marylebone on the evening of Tuesday 20 September while the finale of the event will be the gala dinner and awards ceremony at Battersea Evolution, Battersea Park on Thursday 22 September. This year’s awards will include two for Best

Podium, in basic and applied science, as well as Best Poster and a prize for a young scientist.

History of the IFSCC The IFSCC is a worldwide federation dedicated to international cooperation in cosmetic science and technology.

Interest in the

formation of such an organisation crystallised in Paris in 1956 and culminated in the birth of the federation in Brussels, Belgium on September 8, 1959. At that time, there were only eight countries

entering the Federation – one of which was the UK & Ireland’s Society of Cosmetic Scientists (SCS). Today, 50 societies representing 80

countries have met the high standards of scientific and educational qualifications of the IFSCC and, as members, support the organisation’s aims and programmes. The number of individual members in the

federation now exceeds 16,000 and is still growing. An IFSCC Congress currently happens

bi-annually, in even years, with a smaller Conference in between. These events are hosted, organised and funded by a member society. Hence, the 32nd IFSCC Congress will be hosted by the SCS in London.

Conference sessions Titled ‘Where, Beauty, Science and Innovation Meet’, the IFSCC 32nd Congress will feature 11 keynote speakers, 78 podium presentations, a plethora of posters, and an exhibition of the latest supplier offerings. The conference sessions kick off with

a keynote speech by the University of Manchester’s Professor Rachel Watson, who will give a presentation on the ability of topical anti-ageing cosmetics to remodel skin.
