INTERVIEW Amber Evans Tim Probert – Editor, Personal Care Global
Ahead of the 45th annual Suppliers’ Day on 1-2 May, editor Tim Probert caught up with New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists chair Amber Evans and chair-elect John Carola, who is also personal care business development manager of New Jersey-based distributor Katonah Chemical
Tim Probert (TP): So you’ve been NYSCC chair since 1 January, how have you found it so far? Amber Evans (AE): I find it really fulfilling. It’s an opportunity to lead the way in empowering cosmetic professionals and advancing our industry. I enjoy working with the
executive board and team to bring forward initiatives that I’m passionate about and feel will have a lasting impact on the chapter. It’s hard work for sure but I truly
do enjoy it. I’m honoured that the chapter is entrusting me with this responsibility, it’s certainly not something that I take lightly.
TP: What are your hopes in terms of making a lasting impact? AE: One of our main objectives is to grow our portfolio of resources and initiatives. This includes more opportunities for hands-on experience in cosmetic science. exposing more students to the cosmetic industry and offering more support for education and professional development. We’re increasing the number
of scholarships and grants, as well as creating new initiatives that broaden the scope of our portfolio. From a legacy standpoint, if we

look back five years from now, I would like some of these initiatives to be as large as some of our staples like the Future Chemists Workshop and the scholarships and grants programme.
TP: What is specifically new for this year in terms of new or expanded NYSCC programmes? AE: We want to explore other relevant topics, while continuing to maintain focus on advancements in the staples such as hair and skin care. For example, we recently had an event on beauty supplements, which is a new topic. It was nice to bring together individuals from both the supplement and topical spaces, and to have them learn from and inspire each other. Other topics that we will be
focusing on are oral care and pet care. These areas that are highly relevant, I think the NYSCC is uniquely positioned to support educational programming and exposure in those areas, particularly oral care. Also new this year is the
introduction of more service activities. Last month we walked the walk by holding an environmental cleanup project on a
beach in Asbury Park, New Jersey. We removed trash and
recyclables that could be harmful to the marine life if they entered the ocean. It’s only a small effort but every little bit counts. We’re also celebrating our
members’ accomplishments, whether it be professional or personal, in our monthly newsletter in a segment called NYSCC Celebrates. It’s a way to acknowledge and inspire people, and facilitate some networking. Of course at Suppliers’ Day this
year there is a lot of new being offered with more than 100 hours of education, including three sessions our Scientific Advisory Committee are presenting on Hair: Inspiration & Innovation; Biotechnology in Beauty & Personal Care; and Inspiration & Innovation in NutriCosmetics. The Inspiration Zone is a new
curated destination area on the sold-out exhibit floor featuring breakthrough innovations from worldwide ingredient and formulation suppliers.
TP: This year marks the 70th anniversary of the NYSCC. What is planned to celebrate this landmark? AE: Our main celebration will take place on 16 November at our 70th anniversary gala, where we will honour the chapter’s journey. The focus will be on the past, present and future. Here, we will also celebrate
professionals and students by announcing the recipients of the numerous scholarships and grants that we award annually. This year, we’re on track to give more. Last, but certainly not least, we will install the 2025 board where John will take over as the chair.
